Chapter 10 - The Descent into Darkness
Ethan pushed the oak door open fully, revealing a flight of steep stone steps descending into the gloom. From somewhere deep below, a faint, rhythmic sound vibrated through the stone walls—the slow, steady beep of a medical heart monitor.
Ethan’s chest heaved as he stared down into the abyss. He turned to his second bodyguard. "Keep Claire and Damon in this hall. If either of them moves a single inch, shoot them."

"Yes, sir," the bodyguard replied, drawing his own weapon and stepping between the fallen couple and the front exit.
Ethan took a small flashlight from his jacket pocket, clicked it on, and stepped onto the first stone step, descending slowly into the dark basement of his own home.
