Chapter 13 - The Key on the Tray

Ethan searched the doorframe until he found an electronic keypad beside the glass enclosure. Beside it sat a small stainless steel tray holding a set of keycards and a sealed glass vial labeled with the same neurotoxin compound named in the medical chart.

He swiped the primary keycard through the reader. The heavy glass door hissed as its pneumatic seal released, sliding open to reveal the cold interior of the room.

Ethan stepped inside, dropping the handgun onto a side table as he rushed to the side of the bed. He gently took Eleanor’s pale, thin hand in his own large, calloused palm. Her skin was cool to the touch, but her fingers twitched slightly at his contact.

"I'm here, Eleanor," Ethan whispered, tears finally breaking through his hard exterior as he leaned down to press his forehead against her hand. "I'm so sorry. I didn't know."
