Chapter 11 - Natalie’s Last Assignment
Natalie Price had been recruited by Gregory Shaw for what she believed was protective decoy work.
She resembled Rachel physically and had similar wrist scar.
Shaw told Natalie an auditor faced credible threat and needed temporary identity diversion.
Natalie had worked event security and trusted uncle’s company.
She agreed wear Rachel’s clothes, drive Rachel’s SUV along predetermined route, then abandon vehicle and leave through support car.
She did not know Rachel had not consented.
Who attacked Rachel?
A second contractor.
Name:
Marcus Vale.
Meridian security supervisor.
Marcus was supposed lure Rachel back, sedate her temporarily, and transfer to Voss protection team.
Voss had proposed emergency extraction because of threat, but never authorized assault.
Shaw distorted plan.
Marcus attacked Rachel before Voss team arrived.
Natalie drove SUV.
Then crash.
Why?
Vehicle brake line had been tampered with.
Natalie lost control.
She died.
Who sabotaged brakes?
Forensic evidence from old vehicle was limited, but maintenance record revealed inspection earlier same day by Meridian mechanic under Marcus’s authorization.
Marcus disappeared after crash.
Now wanted.
So Natalie was not murdered as disposable fake body by mastermind necessarily; she was decoy who died because operation sabotaged.
Shaw then saw opportunity.
With Natalie dead and Rachel missing, he allowed authorities believe body Rachel.
Voss, thinking false death might protect living Rachel, reinforced mistake.
Vanessa verified scar.
A conspiracy did not begin with everyone sharing plan.
It grew because multiple people made self-protective decisions around same catastrophe.
Shaw concealed unauthorized decoy.
Voss concealed Rachel survival.
Vanessa obeyed continuity hold.
Marcus disappeared.
Thomas? no.
Daniel later discovered fragments.
Then why Shaw feared Family 6?
Because Daniel Bennett had confronted him about misuse of protected-family funds.
Shaw feared nephew expose him.
Rachel audit was closing in.
Shaw attempted remove Rachel from investigation temporarily—not kill her.
Marcus may have escalated independently.
Shaw died before confessing fully.
Records showed he regretted Natalie death.
He paid anonymous restitution to her parents.
Cowardly and insufficient.
Then Daniel produced recording.
Shaw, weeks before death:
“I asked Marcus to scare Mercer off audit. I told him nobody gets hurt. Natalie was supposed to drive car twelve miles and switch. When she died, I let them call her Rachel because I was afraid. That was the worst thing I ever did.”
This implicated Shaw in unlawful scheme, not intentional homicide.
Marcus remained key.
Then Rachel asked:
“Why did Vanessa say there were never supposed to be two?”
Vanessa explained old decoy rule.
Principal and decoy never appear same controlled space.
Seeing Rachel and Sarah together meant someone deliberately broke rule.
Daniel did.
Why Sarah’s exact scar?
Daniel found old silicone training prosthetic in Voss kit inventory and instructed Sarah use it through spoofed message.
The scar was symbol.
He wanted Vanessa immediately understand Project Haven decoy.
Rachel asked:
“Why involve my mother’s account?”
“Because Elizabeth Mercer created original safeguard.”
“What safeguard?”
Daniel inserted physical token into secure terminal.
Legacy archive opened.
Not secret fortune.
Not assassination list.
A protected incident ledger.
Elizabeth designed it after Family 6.
Rule:
Whenever a decoy and principal were both registered in same facility, system generated immutable dual-presence alert to prevent mistaken identity.
Daniel had recreated that condition.
Rachel plus Sarah.
That triggered lockdown.
Not Daniel manually.
Elizabeth’s twenty-five-year-old safeguard did.
Rachel stared.
“My mother locked the canteen.”
