Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Rachel Mercer had spent eleven months learning how to disappear.
Baseball cap low. Black mask high. Dark jacket zipped to her throat. No jewelry. No phone connected to her name.
The modern military canteen was crowded enough to make invisibility easy. Soldiers moved between tables and serving counters while Rachel crossed the room without attracting a second glance.
She was almost through when she reached across the counter.
Her sleeve slipped.
Three inches of pale skin appeared.
And the scar.
A jagged crescent crossing her wrist.
Across the room, Captain Vanessa Hale stopped with a coffee halfway to her mouth.
The cup tilted.
Hot coffee spilled over Vanessa’s fingers.
She didn't react.
Her eyes were locked on Rachel’s wrist.
“No... you’re supposed to be dead.”
Rachel turned sharply.
Vanessa rushed her.
Before Rachel could move, Vanessa tore away her cap and dragged the mask from her face.
Recognition hit.
Not suspicion.
Terror.
Vanessa grabbed Rachel by the collar.
“Leave. Before he sees you.”
Rachel ripped herself free.
For eleven months, she had believed Vanessa was one of the people who destroyed her life.
Now Vanessa was trying to save it?
Vanessa reached again.
Rachel caught her arm, pivoted and threw her onto the floor beside a table.
Soldiers rose around them.
But Vanessa did not fight back.
She stared past Rachel.
Rachel followed her gaze.
An older man stood at the canteen entrance.
Silver hair.
Expensive dark suit.
No insignia.
No visible security badge.
Yet two senior officers nearby went strangely quiet when they noticed him.
The man looked at Vanessa.
“You had one job, Vanessa.”
Vanessa’s hand began trembling.
Rachel understood.
Vanessa had not been dragging Rachel away to protect herself.
She had been trying to get Rachel out before this man saw her.
“Who are you afraid of?”
The stranger stepped sideways.
Someone emerged from behind him.
Rachel stopped breathing.
A woman.
Same height.
Same build.
Same dark clothes.
Same baseball cap.
Same black mask.
Then the woman raised her sleeve.
Rachel looked at the wrist.
Her own scar stared back at her.
Same crescent.
Same broken lower edge.
Same tiny white line cutting through the center.
Vanessa crawled backward.
“There were never supposed to be two.”
The masked woman reached toward her face.
Rachel stepped forward.
“Take it off.”
The stranger smiled faintly.
The woman’s fingers touched the mask—
Then alarms erupted throughout the building.
Not evacuation alarms.
Security lockdown.
Steel doors began sealing the exits.
The stranger looked at Rachel.
For the first time, his calm expression cracked.
Because the lockdown had not been triggered by him.
Vanessa whispered:
“She found us.”
Rachel looked down.
“Who?”
Vanessa stared at the two identical scars.
“Your mother.”
May you like
Rachel’s blood turned cold.
Her mother had been dead for nineteen years.
