Chapter 10 - Vanessa’s Second Signature
Vanessa had told only half truth.
She signed initial scar-verification form believing body Rachel.
Three weeks later, she learned Rachel might be alive.
A Harbor Ridge administrator contacted Fort Brennan because “Rebecca Lane” muttered Vanessa’s name during recovery.
Vanessa drove there.
She saw Rachel unconscious.
Alive.
That should have ended false death immediately.
Instead Vanessa signed:
TEMPORARY IDENTITY CONTINUITY HOLD.
A legitimate emergency mechanism allowing protected person’s public identity status remain unchanged briefly while threat assessed.
But Rachel’s status was not merely “protected.”
She was legally recorded dead.
Vanessa knew.
“Why?”
Vanessa cried.
“Voss told me correcting it would tell whoever tried to kill you that you survived.”
Voss admitted recommending a 72-hour delay.
Not months.
Then Vanessa received extension orders.
She believed from Inspector General security office.
Forged.
Every fourteen days new directive arrived.
After six weeks she became suspicious.
She filed complaint.
Complaint routed back into compromised Haven relay.
No response.
She should have gone outside chain.
She didn't.
Fear and career pressure made her obey.
After three months she visited Harbor Ridge again.
Rachel had been moved.
Vanessa panicked.
She searched.
Could not locate.
By month four, she understood she had helped someone erase Rachel.
She began secretly collecting evidence.
That was why she reacted so violently in canteen.
Rachel’s appearance meant whoever controlled false status might see her.
Vanessa’s guilt was real.
But so was attempt protect.
Rachel said:
“You don't get to call this protection.”
“I know.”
“Eleven months.”
“I know.”
No easy forgiveness.
Then Daniel Bennett emerged.
He surrendered to federal investigators under attorney protection.
He had triggered canteen lockdown.
He had sent anonymous message telling Rachel go there.
He had spoofed Vanessa/Voss communications and summoned Sarah in disguise.
Why stage spectacle?
Because private complaints disappeared.
Daniel wanted multiple witnesses, active security cameras and senior personnel in one public room.
He wanted impossible contradiction recorded:
dead Rachel alive beside decoy bearing same scar.
Once footage existed across military security systems, no single compromised office could quietly erase it.
Rachel was furious.
“You used me.”
“Yes.”
“You terrified Vanessa.”
“Yes.”
“You brought Sarah into danger.”
“Yes.”
“Why not send evidence?”
“I tried.”
Daniel had sent documents to investigators twice.
Both routed to internal review involving old Haven contractors.
Nothing.
So he engineered public exposure.
Reckless, manipulative, but effective.
Did he attack Rachel eleven months ago?
“No.”
Did he steal token?
“Yes.”
Rachel stiffened.
Daniel had intercepted token after Vanessa handed it to fake courier.
He was real person who signed Mara Ellis? Wait Vanessa receipt forged M. Ellis. Daniel says he stole later from fake courier? Need logic. He tracked courier, recovered token. Receipt itself produced by impostor. Daniel later obtained token from drop box.
He used Elizabeth account to send current messages.
Why?
Because old credential bypassed compromised relay monitoring.
“Who attacked me?”
Daniel answered:
“Natalie Price.”
Rachel stared.
Natalie—the dead woman.
