Chapter 8 - Margaret’s Promise to Daniel
Margaret Ellis did not secretly manipulate Emma’s marriage.
She learned about Daniel after Emma and Daniel became engaged.
Daniel recognized Ellis surname from Briar Glen records and contacted Margaret.
He asked one question:
“Was Emma the baby Rose used to talk about?”
Margaret said yes.
Daniel wanted tell Emma.
Margaret begged him wait.
Why?
Emma had never sought biological family.
Susan and Mark were her parents.
Margaret feared appearing suddenly would destabilize life.
She asked Daniel let Emma choose if she ever wanted records opened.
Daniel agreed.
That decision respected Emma superficially but still withheld relevant connection.
Then Lily was born with rose mark.
Daniel contacted Margaret again.
He wanted know Rose whereabouts.
Margaret said she had not seen sister in years.
But that was lie.
She had received letters.
Why lie?
Rose had asked.
Then Emma found Margaret’s storage unit through estate executor.
Inside were letters from Rose spanning 2005–2018.
Rose was alive at least 2018.
Locations changed.
Boston.
Chicago.
Portland.
Then Denver.
Not hiding from killer.
She had built career under married name:
Rose Vale-Hart.
She worked in nonprofit compliance.
Why never contact Emma?
Letters explained.
I keep thinking about calling her. Then I remember she has parents who loved her enough to never make her feel abandoned. I don't want to enter only because I need forgiveness.
Rose respected boundary perhaps too rigidly.
Then 2016 letter:
Daniel found you.
He seems decent.
Margaret replied? Draft carbon:
He loves Emma. He knows enough. Leave them alone unless Emma asks.
So Rose complied.
Then 2018:
Daniel contacted me about Lily’s mark. He thinks it means something. It doesn’t. Tell him to stop turning a harmless birthmark into prophecy.
So Rose herself said mark wasn't proof.
Then next paragraph:
But if Eleanor sees it, she may remember what she did at Briar Glen. That is what frightens me.
Emma stopped.
What did Eleanor do?
Not send Rose away.
Something else.
She searched next letter.
Missing.
Again.
But this time Eleanor could not have removed; storage sealed after Margaret death.
Executor inventory showed one envelope taken by:
Daniel Bennett.
Six months before his death.
Daniel had it.
Where?
Emma searched old belongings.
Nothing.
Then Noah came downstairs holding small wooden box.
“I know where Dad kept secret papers.”
Emma stared.
“Where?”
Noah pointed toward kitchen pantry.
Daniel had once shown Noah emergency documents behind removable kickboard.
Emma pulled panel.
Metal box.
Inside missing Rose letter.
It said:
Eleanor was the one who signed the Briar Glen transfer under my name.
Emma’s pulse accelerated.
Transfer?
Which transfer?
Next line:
She moved a child from Briar Glen without Margaret’s authorization.
Emma read name.
Not Rose.
EMMA ELLIS — INFANT PLACEMENT REVIEW.
Impossible.
Emma had been adopted in 1992.
Briar Glen opened later? It operated maybe 1991. Still she was infant, could have temporary pre-adoption residence? But earlier said Briar Glen not adoption. Need logical.
Document dated 1992, perhaps Briar Glen emergency family cottage existed before later education program. Fine.
But Eleanor said she met Rose 1991 at Briar Glen. Works.
Why was infant Emma there?
Only for forty-eight hours between hospital discharge and adoptive placement because Harbor emergency nursery renovation, using licensed family-support wing.
Eleanor, then foundation administrator, signed transport form.
What did she forge?
Margaret’s authorization.
Why?
A snowstorm? Need motive.
Susan and Mark Collins were waiting to receive Emma.
Margaret had already signed adoption consent but objected to temporary transfer to Briar Glen because Thomas Mercer worked with Bennett Foundation and might learn.
Eleanor moved Emma anyway to maintain placement schedule.
Improper.
Not abduction.
Emma stayed forty-eight hours.
Then went lawful adoptive parents.
Years later Rose discovered transfer signature.
She believed Eleanor violated Margaret.
That was the deeper reason their relationship fractured.
Eleanor had spent decades hiding it.
And Lily’s birthmark reminded her not merely of Rose—
but of baby Emma.
Because Eleanor had held infant Emma during those forty-eight hours.
