Chapter 15 - What the Rose Really Meant
The rose-shaped birthmark was not proof of betrayal.
It did not mean Lily belonged to another man.
It did not mean Daniel had a secret sister.
It did not mean Rose was Lily’s mother.

It did not unlock an inheritance.
It was a family trait.
Emma’s biological maternal grandmother was Catherine Ellis.
Catherine had two daughters by different fathers:
Margaret Ellis and Rose Ellis.
Margaret became Emma’s biological mother.
Rose was Emma’s biological aunt.
Emma was lawfully adopted as infant by Susan and Mark Collins.

Lily considered.

Eleanor cried.

Lily did not hug her.

Noah stayed beside sister.
Emma stayed closer.
Trust, if it returned, would be earned slowly.
Rose became part of Emma’s life gradually.

Emma stared.

Emma had never heard name.
Then Noah wandered into doorway.
“Mom?”
Emma immediately closed folder.

He smiled and ran away.
Emma reopened photograph.
She studied unknown man.
Something about him bothered her.

Emma stared toward hallway.
