Chapter 3 - Emma’s Sealed Beginning
Emma had always known she was adopted.
It had never been secret.
Her parents, Susan and Mark Collins, told her before she was old enough to understand word.
They loved her completely.
Her biological origins had simply never mattered much.
Until now.
Susan still had adoption papers.
Emma drove over after dropping children with trusted neighbor.
Susan immediately knew something was wrong.
Emma showed photograph of Rose.
“Have you ever seen her?”
Susan’s face changed.
Not recognition.
Concern.
“No.”
“Did you know anything about my biological mother?”
“We were told she requested confidentiality.”
“Name?”
“Unavailable.”
Emma showed medical page.
Susan stared at crossed-out line.
“That wasn't there when you were little.”
“What?”
“We received original copy. That line wasn't blacked out.”
Susan retrieved old storage box.
Inside was photocopy from Emma’s first pediatric appointment.
Same form.
Same rosette-nevus notation.
But family-history line was visible:
MATERNAL FAMILY — SIMILAR MARK REPORTED.
So someone later altered Emma’s medical copy.
When?
The newer file had been transferred after Emma married Daniel.
Hospital metadata showed records requested by:
BENNETT FAMILY MEDICAL SERVICES.
Emma had never authorized Bennett Family Medical Services.
Daniel had.
As spouse during insurance transition.
Perhaps routine.
Perhaps not.
Then Susan remembered something.
“When Daniel asked for your childhood records, he asked me strange question.”
“What?”
“Whether agency ever mentioned Briar Glen.”
Emma sat down.
“He knew?”
“I thought it was insurance.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“You were newly married. He said he was researching family medical history because you were pregnant with Noah.”
Noah.
Daniel had started searching after Emma’s first pregnancy.
Years before Lily.
Therefore Lily’s mark did not start mystery.
Emma did.
Then Susan produced adoption intake summary.
Emma was born in 1992.
Placed with Collins family as infant.
Agency:
Harbor Family Services.
Nothing about Briar Glen.
But social worker:
Margaret Ellis.
Emma searched name.
Margaret Ellis later became administrator at Briar Glen.
Connection.
She called retired Harbor attorney.
He could not release sealed records without process.
But he confirmed something carefully.
“Briar Glen was not an adoption agency.”
“Then why would Daniel connect me to it?”
“I can't answer.”
“Was my biological mother there?”
Pause.
“I can't answer.”
“Was her name Rose?”
Longer pause.
Then:
“Ms. Collins, Rose Bennett was twelve years old in 1992.”
Emma froze.
Rose could not be her biological mother.
She was child herself.
So birthmark did not mean Lily descended from Rose.
At least not through Emma’s mother.
Then who was Rose?
The attorney added:
“If you're investigating Rose, you need distinguish Rose Bennett from Rose Ellis.”
Two Roses.
Emma stared.
“Who is Rose Ellis?”
“I've already said too much.”
Call ended.
Emma searched.
Rose Ellis.
Nothing.
Then one result appeared in digitized property filing from 2005.
Briar Glen closure inventory.
Personal effects transferred to:
ROSE ELLIS — BENEFICIARY FILE 17.
Emma enlarged scan.
Attached handwritten note:
NOT BENNETT.
DO NOT CONFUSE WITH R.B.
Two Roses had existed at Briar Glen.
One Rose Bennett.
One Rose Ellis.
And someone had spent years making sure their records were never confused.
Then Emma noticed photograph again.
Teenage girl beside Daniel.
Back said ROSE BENNETT.
But handwriting naming Rose was not Daniel’s.
Only second line was.
Someone else had labeled photograph.
Perhaps incorrectly.
Emma flipped it under lamp.
