Chapter 4 - The Wrong Last Name
The photograph had been relabeled.
Originally:
ROSE ELLIS.
Later someone wrote:
ROSE BENNETT.
Why?
Emma confronted Eleanor at house.
Eleanor opened door but did not invite her in.
Emma held photograph up.
“You changed this.”
Eleanor looked at handwriting.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To protect her.”
“From what?”
“Henry.”
Henry Bennett.
Daniel’s father.
Emma had known Henry only through stories.
Successful developer.
Strict.
Generous publicly.
Difficult privately.
“What did Henry have to do with Rose?”
Eleanor looked exhausted.
“Everything and less than you think.”
“Was she his daughter?”
“No.”
Immediate.
Certain.
“Daniel’s sister?”
“No.”
“Your daughter?”
“No.”
“Then why Bennett?”
“Because Henry made it safer for people to think she belonged to us.”
Emma stared.
That sounded backwards.
Eleanor finally allowed her inside.
She explained Briar Glen was not ordinary school.
Bennett Foundation funded short-term residential program for children whose families faced housing instability, domestic crises, hospitalization or temporary guardianship disruptions.
Not orphanage.
Not secret prison.
Rose Ellis arrived there in 1991 with older sister.
Her sister’s name:
Margaret Ellis.
The same woman later listed as Emma’s adoption social worker.
Emma felt room shrink.
“Margaret was Rose’s sister?”
“Yes.”
“How old was Rose?”
“Eleven when she arrived. Margaret was twenty-four.”
“Why was Margaret also social worker?”
“She worked for Harbor Family Services. Rose lived with her. Margaret suffered serious car accident and needed months of rehabilitation. Briar Glen took Rose temporarily.”
Reasonable.
Then why secrecy?
Because Rose’s biological father was dangerous?
No.
Because Margaret was not actually sister?
Eleanor shook head.
“They were sisters.”
“Then what?”
Henry Bennett discovered Rose had congenital rosette mark identical to one documented in old Ellis family medical records.
Why did Henry care?
He didn't initially.
Daniel did.
As teenager years later, Daniel befriended Rose when Margaret became Briar Glen administrator and Rose visited.
Then in 2004 something happened.
Rose accused Henry of altering Briar Glen beneficiary records.
Henry denied.
Foundation board investigated.
Rose disappeared from Bennett family orbit.
Daniel believed Eleanor knew why.
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“She asked me for help.”
“And?”
“I sent her away.”
Emma stared.
“Where?”
“I won't tell you yet.”
“Why not?”
“Because I don't know who's been looking for her.”
Emma laughed in disbelief.
“It's been twenty-two years.”
“Exactly.”
Then Eleanor looked at Emma’s face.
“You have Rose’s eyes.”
Emma stopped.
“You just said she isn't my mother.”
“She isn't.”
“Then why?”
Eleanor closed eyes.
“Because Rose Ellis was your aunt.”
Emma’s heart slammed.
“My biological aunt?”
“Yes.”
“Then Margaret—”
Eleanor interrupted.
“Margaret Ellis was your biological mother.”
Emma could barely speak.
“My adoption social worker was my mother?”
“Yes.”
“And she processed her own daughter’s adoption?”
“No.”
Eleanor shook head.
“That’s what altered file makes it look like.”
Emma leaned forward.
“Then who did?”
