Chapter 9 - Aaron Mitchell, 2007
Aaron laughed.
“I wasn't born when you disappeared.”
“Exactly.”
The ledger contained future placements.
Projected pregnancies.
Expected births.
Families under observation.
Aaron Mitchell appeared on a page dated eighteen months before his conception.
Mother:
Laura Lawson.
Proposed father:
Michael Mitchell.
Male child preferred.
Aaron stared.
“My parents hadn't even married yet.”
Laura went cold.
She and Michael were dating.
Marriage came later.
Henry had apparently been planning their family.
But why?
Henry finally told them.
Michael Mitchell wasn't merely the kind man who helped Rebecca escape.
He had been investigating Henry.
Michael worked in information security.
He discovered suspicious transfers connected to Henry's guardianship network.
He approached Laura partly because of her father.
Laura slapped Henry's table.
“Michael loved me.”
“I didn't say he didn't.”
Both could be true.
Again.
Michael began with an investigation.
Then fell genuinely in love.
Henry discovered it.
Rather than remove Michael, he decided to control him.
Rebecca's disappearance gave Henry leverage.
Michael had helped falsify documents to protect her.
Henry could expose him.
So Michael remained close.
Married Laura.
Built a family.
And quietly collected evidence.
Then Aaron noticed something.
“Male child preferred.”
Laura looked at Henry.
“What does that mean?”
Henry claimed he didn't write it.
The handwriting belonged to someone else.
Rebecca knew whose.
Michael.
Aaron recoiled.
“My dad requested a son?”
Not exactly.
Michael had added notes to Henry's ledger while secretly copying it.
The phrase was code.
MALE CHILD PREFERRED meant the family was being targeted for a specific placement.
Michael had discovered someone intended to substitute a child.
Laura stared.
“Substitute?”
Henry's network sometimes altered custody records.
Not newborn swaps.
But in rare cases, children whose identities became legally complicated were placed under another child's documentation.
Michael believed someone planned to use Laura's future baby as a clean identity.
He spent years preventing it.
Aaron whispered:
“Was I switched?”
DNA already proved Laura was his mother.
Michael's stored DNA was tested.
Michael was Aaron's biological father.
No switch.
Then what had Michael prevented?
Rebecca answered:
“Your death.”
Silence.
Someone had planned to register Laura's real child as stillborn.
Another infant would receive his identity.
Michael discovered the plan before Aaron was conceived.
He stayed close to the network so that when Laura became pregnant, he could stop it.
Aaron's eyes filled.
“My father knew someone might come after me before I existed.”
“Yes.”
“Who wanted my identity?”
Rebecca looked at Evan.
Evan stiffened.
His adoption documents listed his birth four days after Aaron.
Two boys.
Almost identical age.
One hidden.
One public.
Aaron understood.
“They wanted Evan to become me.”
Rebecca nodded.
But she had refused.
She hid her son through a separate adoption instead.
Michael protected Aaron.
Daniel arranged Evan's placement.
Everyone built lies around two babies because they believed Henry's network still controlled the system.
Then Henry laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
Rebecca glared.
“What?”
Henry looked at Aaron.
“Evan wasn't the child meant to replace you.”
Aaron's stomach dropped.
“Then who was?”
