Chapter 5 - The Girl in the Coffin

Police reopened the eighteen-year-old case.

The coffin was exhumed.

Laura refused to attend.

Aaron did.

Not because he wanted to see anything.

Because Rebecca's entire story had been built around adults refusing to look directly at uncomfortable truths.

Aaron was finished looking away.

DNA confirmed the remains were not Rebecca.

They belonged to Hannah Pierce.

Hannah's surviving brother collapsed when detectives told him.

For eighteen years, his family believed Hannah abandoned them.

She hadn't.

Someone buried her under another girl's name.

But investigators found something strange.

Hannah had not died in the car fire.

She suffered a serious head injury before the vehicle burned.

The crash had concealed an earlier confrontation.

Rebecca's photographs became evidence.

Henry Lawson immediately became a suspect.

Except Henry was officially dead.

Again, another grave.

Another unavailable witness.

Aaron asked Laura:

“Did you see Grandpa's body?”

“No.”

Closed casket.

Aaron laughed bitterly.

“Apparently nobody in this family dies normally.”

Then Michael's attorney contacted them.

Michael had left a second document.

It could be released only if Rebecca's grave was opened.

Inside was a confession.

Michael admitted helping Rebecca escape after Hannah's death.

But he did not kill Hannah.

Rebecca called him that night because she trusted him.

Michael found her beside the road, terrified and covered in Hannah's blood.

She told him Henry had confronted both girls.

Hannah tried to protect Rebecca.

Something happened.

Hannah fell.

Henry panicked.

He decided to turn the accident into an opportunity.

Rebecca was already planning to expose him for financial crimes involving school scholarship funds.

If Rebecca became the victim, Henry could make both problems disappear.

He placed Hannah in Rebecca's car.

Rebecca's belongings went with her.

Then he set the vehicle on fire.

Michael discovered part of the plan.

He got Rebecca away.

But Henry threatened Laura.

If Rebecca resurfaced, Henry would destroy Laura and take Rebecca away legally using documents that portrayed Laura as mentally unstable.

Michael made a terrible choice.

He helped Rebecca disappear.

Laura slammed the confession onto the table.

“He stole eighteen years from me.”

Aaron said nothing.

Michael believed he was protecting Laura.

Another person making a life-changing decision for someone else.

Then Aaron reached the final paragraph.

Laura,

Rebecca didn't want you to know where she went.

Not because she hated you.

Because she discovered something about Henry that made her believe staying dead was the only way to protect Aaron.

Laura stared.

“Aaron wasn't born yet.”

Exactly.

Michael wrote the confession before Aaron's birth?

No.

Years later.

But Rebecca apparently knew Aaron would exist before Laura became pregnant.

Aaron whispered:

“How?”

Then Brent arrived with something found inside Daniel's abandoned car.

A photograph.

Rebecca.

Older.

Alive.

Holding a newborn baby.

On the back:

AARON — THREE DAYS OLD.

Aaron stopped breathing.

“That isn't Mom holding me.”

Laura's knees weakened.

And beneath Rebecca's photograph was one handwritten sentence:

HE CAN NEVER KNOW WHICH ONE OF US GAVE BIRTH TO HIM.
