Chapter 11 - The Grandmother Who Never Died

Margaret Lawson supposedly died when Laura was fourteen.
Cancer.
Unlike Henry's fake death, Laura remembered the hospital.
The funeral.
The grief.
But the woman in Michael's photograph looked like Margaret twenty years later.
Alive.
Aaron stared.
“My grandmother?”
Laura shook her head.
“I saw her body.”
For once, an open casket.
No identity swap seemed possible.
Then Henry explained.
Margaret had a younger sister.
Anna.
Identical twins.
Laura had never known.
Henry married Margaret.
Anna disappeared from the family before Laura was born.
Why?
Because Anna and Henry created the guardianship network together.
Margaret discovered it.
She threatened exposure.
Then she became sick.
Henry insisted her illness was natural.
Laura no longer believed anything without records.
Anna vanished shortly before Margaret died.
Years later, she returned under multiple identities.
Anna Pierce.
Anna Lawson.
Anna Bell.
She became the hidden administrator who could alter placements while Henry handled money.
After Hannah's death, Henry wanted the network dismantled.
Anna wanted expansion.
“You expect us to believe you became moral?” Rebecca asked.
“No.”
Henry smiled bitterly.
“I became frightened.”
Anna believed children could be moved into “better” families.
She treated identity like paperwork.
If one child died, another could fill the legal vacancy.
If a wealthy couple wanted a baby, records could be adjusted.
Henry had been greedy.
Anna was ideological.
That made her worse.
Michael spent years hunting her.
Rebecca's sons became targets because Anna wanted leverage over Rebecca.
One twin, Evan, disappeared into adoption.
The other, Brent, was placed with Daniel.
Then Aaron was born.
Anna planned to eventually merge one of Rebecca's sons into Aaron's identity if Laura's baby died or became unavailable.
Michael prevented it.
The plan collapsed.
But Anna kept watching the three boys.
Aaron.
Brent.
Evan.
Three boys born within days.
Three connected families.
Then Aaron remembered graduation.
Brent had been cruel.
Evan hidden.
Aaron publicly wore Rebecca's dress.
A signal.
Maybe Michael's promise wasn't just meant to expose Daniel.
It was meant to draw Anna out.
Laura became furious.
“Michael used Aaron as bait?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.”
“He told him to wear the dress!”
“He gave Aaron a choice.”
“Without telling him the danger!”
Rebecca couldn't defend that.
Aaron interrupted.
“I chose it.”
Laura looked at him.
“That doesn't make it okay.”
“No.”
Aaron agreed.
“But Dad expected someone to react.”
And someone had.
Not just Daniel.
Graduation security footage showed a woman leaving the auditorium immediately after Aaron stepped onto the stage.
Approximately seventy.
Silver hair.
She had been sitting in the last row.
No ticket registered.
The camera caught her face.
Henry whispered:
“Anna.”
Then another image appeared.
Anna wasn't watching Aaron.
May you like
She was watching Laura.
And she was crying.
