Chapter 12 - What Rebecca Promised

Police searched for Anna Lawson.

Nothing.

No current address.

No legitimate identity.

Then Aaron received a package.

Inside was his graduation photograph.

Him in the red dress.

On the back:

YOU LOOK LIKE HER.

No signature.

Laura assumed Anna.

Rebecca disagreed.

“Like who?”

“Hannah.”

Aaron frowned.

He looked nothing like Hannah.

Rebecca explained.

Not physically.

The act.

Hannah had worn the red dress on the night she chose to help expose something dangerous despite knowing people would laugh at her and dismiss her.

Aaron had unknowingly repeated the gesture.

Then Rebecca finally revealed what Aaron's promise meant.

Michael had visited Aaron secretly two weeks before his death.

Aaron remembered.

They sat in the garage.

Michael told him:

“If you ever find something in my things that makes your mother afraid, don't assume fear means she's lying. Sometimes fear means she knows the cost of the truth.”

Aaron asked whether Michael was dying.

Michael said no.

Eight months later, he was dead.

Heart attack.

At least officially.

Aaron whispered:

“You think Dad was killed?”

Rebecca had evidence.

Michael's toxicology report contained a medication he wasn't prescribed.

Not necessarily lethal.

But concerning.

The investigation reopened.

Laura's grief became rage.

“Who was with him that day?”

One person.

Daniel.

Daniel had found Michael collapsed and called emergency services.

Brent looked at his father.

Again.

Daniel shouted:

“I didn't poison him!”

Security footage supported him.

Daniel arrived after Michael was already in distress.

Then who had seen Michael earlier?

A woman at a coffee shop.

Silver-haired.

Anna.

Michael met her voluntarily.

They spoke for forty minutes.

She gave him an envelope.

Two hours later, he collapsed.

Investigators found the café cup preserved only because Michael had taken it with him into his car.

Residue showed the same medication.

Anna had likely drugged him.

But the dose shouldn't have killed a healthy adult.

Michael had an undiagnosed cardiac vulnerability.

Anna may have intended only to incapacitate him.

Or knew exactly what would happen.

Then Rebecca revealed her own promise.

After Michael helped her disappear eighteen years earlier, she promised him:

“If you protect Mom's future children, I'll come back when Anna is gone.”

Anna never disappeared.

So Rebecca stayed away.

Aaron stared.

“You sacrificed eighteen years.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.”

“I made a choice out of fear and kept making it because admitting it was wrong became harder every year.”

Laura began crying.

That honesty mattered.

Rebecca continued:

“I should have come home.”

Laura whispered:

“Yes.”

“I should have trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“I'm sorry.”

Laura did not immediately hug her.

Eighteen years couldn't disappear because of one apology.

But she reached across the table.

Rebecca took her hand.

Then Aaron's phone buzzed.

A livestream invitation.

Unknown sender.

He opened it.

Anna Lawson appeared.

Sitting inside Westbridge High's empty auditorium.

On the graduation stage.

The red dress's matching scarf lay across her lap.

She looked into the camera.

“Aaron.”

Everyone froze.

Anna smiled.

“Bring Rebecca.”

May you like

A pause.

“And I'll tell you which one of her sons Hannah died trying to save.”
