Chapter 14 - Hannah's Last Recording
Hannah appeared seventeen.
Red dress.
Laughing nervously into the camera.
“If Rebecca finds this, she's going to kill me for borrowing her dress.”
Rebecca sobbed.
Then Hannah became serious.
She had discovered Anna's operation.
Henry was involved.
Daniel knew pieces.
Michael suspected something.
But Hannah trusted Rebecca.
She planned to give her the evidence after the fundraiser.
Then she said:
“There's one thing Rebecca doesn't know.”
Rebecca leaned toward the screen.
Hannah continued:
“Anna isn't moving children for money anymore.”
She had found medical files.
Anna was searching for children descended from women involved in the earliest guardianship cases.
Why?
Not genetics.
Witnesses.
Some of those children had grown up and remembered details adults assumed they had forgotten.
Names.
Rooms.
Faces.
Anna wanted to know who remembered what.
The network was cleaning its history.
Then Hannah said:
“Laura is on the list.”
Laura froze.
She had been fourteen when Margaret died.
Around that time, she remembered waking one night and seeing her mother arguing with Anna.
Except Laura thought she had dreamed it.
Identical twins.
One dying.
One secretly returning.
Margaret had discovered Anna's network.
Before dying, Margaret hid records.
Anna spent decades looking for them.
She believed Laura knew where.
Laura didn't.
Or didn't consciously remember.
Aaron whispered:
“So all of this comes back to Mom.”
Rebecca nodded.
Anna had watched Laura for decades.
Rebecca's death.
Michael.
The children.
All ways to keep Laura close without forcing the memory.
Then Hannah's recording reached its final minute.
Footsteps sounded off-camera.
Hannah looked frightened.
“Someone's coming.”
She hid the camera.
Voices.
Henry.
Daniel.
Then another woman.
Anna.
They argued.
Hannah emerged.
“Leave Rebecca alone.”
A struggle.
The graduation bell fell.
Hannah stumbled backward.
She struck the retaining wall.
Daniel screamed.
“Call an ambulance!”
Henry moved toward her.
But Anna stopped him.
Not to prevent help.
To check Hannah.
“She has a pulse.”
Daniel shouted:
“Then call!”
Anna looked toward Rebecca approaching in the distance.
Then made her decision.
“No.”
Rebecca screamed at the screen.
The footage continued.
Anna ordered Henry to move Hannah.
Daniel protested.
Henry obeyed.
Then Anna said:
“Rebecca has to die tonight.”
Daniel whispered:
“What?”
“Not physically.”
Anna looked toward the approaching girl.
“On paper.”
There it was.
Anna created Rebecca's fake death because Rebecca had seen too much.
Hannah's accidental injury became the opportunity.
Michael arrived minutes later and rescued Rebecca before Anna could control her physically.
But the identity swap had already begun.
The recording ended.
Rebecca cried for Hannah.
Daniel cried too.
Henry stared at the floor.
The central truth was finally clear.
Then Laura noticed something in the final frame.
Hannah's camera had fallen sideways.
For half a second, it captured Anna's wrist.
A bracelet.
Laura recognized it.
Her mother's bracelet.
Margaret's.
Not Anna's.
Laura whispered:
“No.”
Aaron turned.
“What?”
Laura rewound.
Same scar.
Same bracelet.
Then another detail.
Anna used her left hand.
Margaret had been left-handed.
Henry looked up.
His face became gray.
Rebecca whispered:
“Henry?”
He began crying.
“The woman in that video wasn't Anna.”
Laura stopped breathing.
