Chapter 7 - Thomas’s Son

DNA confirmed it.

Thomas Hale was Ryan’s biological father.

Margaret had an affair with him during the original research program.

Ryan was born eighteen months before Claire.

William Mercer raised him without knowing.

Claire felt as though every parent in their lives had built a house from stolen identities.

Ryan sat across from her.

“So Thomas knew I was his son.”

“Yes.”

“And hired me to watch you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The Hale Archive answered.

Thomas had followed Ryan from childhood.

School records.

Medical reports.

Employment.

He never approached because Margaret threatened to expose the original embryo-selection scandal.

But when Claire was nineteen, Thomas learned Margaret had begun watching her again.

So he hired Ryan.

Not because Ryan was expendable.

Because Thomas believed Margaret would never harm her own son.

Ryan had been placed near Claire as protection.

Margaret turned that protection into opportunity.

She encouraged the relationship.

Thomas objected.

Then something unexpected happened.

Claire and Ryan fell in love.

Thomas wrote:

I created this problem by keeping them ignorant.

Claire stopped reading.

She remembered her father walking her down the aisle.

His smile.

His tears.

He had known Ryan was his son.

He had watched two people he loved marry while carrying a secret that could destroy them.

Not incest.

Not biological danger.

But betrayal.

“Why didn’t he stop the wedding?”

Ryan asked.

Because Claire was happy.

Because Ryan was happy.

Because Thomas was dying from cancer and terrified that exposing everything would leave Claire alone.

Cowardice again.

Then the question returned.

Why did Margaret suddenly want Claire to leave Ryan?

Not because of genetics.

Not because of inheritance alone.

Evelyn revealed the ledger’s final section.

Margaret had been moving money.

Millions from shell companies connected to old Hale patents.

Thomas’s death triggered an audit clause.

Claire’s child would trigger another.

If born while Claire and Ryan were married, Ryan became co-trustee.

And Ryan had found the ledger.

Margaret realized her son might expose her.

So she needed the marriage ended before the baby arrived.

She began manipulating Ryan.

Telling him Claire planned to take the child.

That Claire secretly knew about Thomas.

That she would expose Ryan’s paternity and destroy him.

Then came the unthinkable proposal:

“Make her leave you.”

Ryan agreed.

He believed intimidation would force Claire to move out.

But Margaret escalated the instructions.

Claire stared at him.

“You still obeyed.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was angry.”

“At me?”

“At everything.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No.”

He looked directly at her.

“I wanted someone else to hurt because I was hurting.”

There.

Ugly.

Simple.

True.

Claire appreciated the truth more than another excuse.

Then investigators enhanced the recordings.

Margaret’s voice appeared on seven nights.

But another voice appeared on three.

Male.

Giving Ryan instructions.

Ryan swore he didn’t recognize it.

Evelyn did.

“Daniel.”

Claire’s biological father.

Daniel had claimed to be helping them.

Yet his voice was beneath recordings of Claire’s abuse.

Police called his number.

Disconnected.

His Vermont facility confirmed he had vanished.

Then Claire received a message.

FROM DANIEL:

You finally know who Ryan’s father is.

Now ask what Thomas did to your mother when she tried to tell you.

Attached was a photograph.

Claire’s mother Elaine.

May you like

Alive.

Dated six months after Claire had attended her funeral.
