Chapter 11 - Evelyn’s Experiment

Evelyn admitted using Thomas’s voice.

She called it bait.

She wanted to discover whether Ryan would follow instructions he believed came from Daniel.

“Why?”

“Because Margaret told me he would.”

Claire stared at her.

“So you participated.”

“I never told him to hurt you.”

“You gave instructions.”

“To isolate you. Frighten you. Make you leave.”

“And when you realized what he was actually doing?”

Evelyn went silent.

That silence mattered.

“You kept watching.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed proof.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

Everyone needed proof.

Everyone needed data.

Everyone needed one more observation.

And Claire was always the person paying for it.

“You’re a doctor.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was afraid.”

“Yes.”

“And you watched because it gave you evidence.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

That ended Claire’s sympathy.

Evelyn had convinced herself she was exposing Margaret.

In reality, she reproduced the same logic as the original experiment.

Observe.

Document.

Don’t intervene too early.

The recordings became evidence against Ryan, Margaret and Evelyn.

But something remained unexplained.

Who had first encouraged Ryan to frighten Claire?

Margaret blamed Daniel.

Evelyn blamed Margaret.

Daniel blamed both.

Ryan finally gave investigators his old phone.

Deleted messages were recovered.

The first instruction had arrived four months earlier:

CLAIRE KNOWS ABOUT THOMAS. GET HER OUT BEFORE SHE ACTIVATES THE TRUST.

Sender disguised.

Metadata traced to Hale Biomedical’s old server.

Only three people had current access.

Margaret.

Evelyn.

And Claire.

Claire stared.

“I’ve never accessed it.”

Not knowingly.

But her laptop had.

Remote access.

Someone used Claire’s credentials.

The login originated inside her house.

Dates corresponded to nights when Ryan was away.

Claire felt cold.

Who had been inside?

Margaret had keys.

Evelyn claimed she didn’t.

Then Claire remembered her cleaner.

Megan.

Twice weekly.

Recommended by Margaret.

Police located her.

Her real name wasn’t Megan.

It was Sophie Vale.

Melissa Vale’s daughter.

Another branch of the old research network.

Claire almost laughed at the absurdity.

But Sophie Vale wasn’t part of a master plan.

Margaret had paid her to watch Claire.

Later Daniel paid her more.

Then Evelyn.

Three different people unknowingly hired the same woman.

She collected information for whoever paid.

“Did you send the first message to Ryan?”

“Yes.”

“Who told you to?”

She handed investigators the payment account.

Not Margaret.

Not Daniel.

Not Evelyn.

A corporation.

Horizon Patient Advocacy.

Director:

Elaine Hale.

Claire stared.

“My mother is dead.”

“Yes.”

The corporation had been formed before Elaine’s death and continued automatically through a trustee.

Who controlled it now?

The trustee’s identity had been sealed.

A court order opened it.

Thomas Hale.

After Thomas died, successor trustee:

Claire Hale Mercer.

Claire.

She had technically controlled the corporation for eleven years without knowing it.

But someone had been signing her name.

Claire examined the signatures.

They looked perfect.

Except for one habit.

Claire dotted her lowercase i slightly to the right.

The forged signatures dotted directly above.

Ryan noticed first.

“I know who writes like that.”

Claire looked at him.

“Who?”

“My mother.”

Margaret.

Again.

But when confronted, Margaret smiled strangely.

“I forged many things.”

“Did you forge these?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“My husband.”

William Mercer.

Ryan’s legal father.

The man believed dead for twenty-two years.

Claire’s exhaustion turned almost surreal.

“Is anyone in this family actually dead?”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“William is.”

“Then how did he sign documents last month?”

She whispered:

“Because somebody is using the signature stamp he left behind.”

“Who has it?”

Margaret looked at Ryan.

Ryan went pale.

“My brother.”

May you like

Claire froze.

Ryan had never told her he had a brother.
