Chapter 5 - Patient Claire

Claire had not been conceived naturally.

Not exactly.

Her mother Elaine had undergone fertility treatment after years of trying to conceive with Thomas.

Daniel donated genetic material.

Thomas consented.

Elaine consented.

So far, unusual but not sinister.

Then Margaret altered the protocol.

Without their informed consent.

She selected embryos based on experimental genetic criteria.

Claire was the only successful pregnancy.

Margaret had spent thirty-one years following the outcome.

From a distance.

Until Ryan.

“Why me?” Claire asked Daniel.

“Because of what our family carries.”

The Hale variant offered unusual resistance to a specific class of autoimmune disease.

Margaret believed combining it with the Bennett variant could produce an even stronger protective profile.

“Bennett?”

“Ryan’s biological family.”

Claire stopped.

Ryan’s surname was Mercer.

Daniel continued.

“Margaret changed her name after the trial.”

Claire looked through the hospital glass toward Ryan.

His mother had hidden more than a career.

Her birth name:

Margaret Bennett.

The Bennett family had supplied genetic samples to the original research.

Ryan descended from them.

Claire descended from the Hales.

Margaret had spent decades tracking both lines.

Then Claire asked the question that mattered.

“Did she make me marry Ryan?”

“She created the opportunity.”

“Did she make me love him?”

“No.”

That answer hurt differently.

Because some of it had been real.

Their first apartment.

Rainy Sundays.

His hand trembling when she told him she was pregnant.

None of that needed to be fake for what came later to be unforgivable.

“Why did Margaret want me to leave before birth?”

Daniel hesitated.

“That part doesn’t make sense.”

“What?”

“If her goal were the baby, she’d want you close.”

Exactly.

Claire remembered Margaret’s words:

You were supposed to make her leave voluntarily.

Leave Ryan.

Not disappear.

Not lose the baby.

Leave the marriage.

Why?

Daniel became silent.

“Claire, ask who owns Hale Biomedical if your child is born while you’re married to Ryan.”

Lawyers reviewed Thomas’s trust.

The answer was bizarre.

Thomas had amended it after discovering Margaret’s interest.

If Claire had a biological child while married, voting rights transferred temporarily into a protective family trust.

Her spouse would become co-trustee.

Ryan.

Margaret’s son.

Margaret should have wanted that.

Instead she desperately wanted Claire divorced.

Unless she didn’t want Ryan controlling the trust.

Claire stared through the glass.

Margaret had arranged their meeting years earlier.

But sometime afterward, her plan changed.

Why?

Then Daniel said:

“Because Ryan found something.”

Ryan denied it.

At first.

Then Claire remembered the recordings.

“That wasn’t supposed to be recorded.”

Not: You weren’t supposed to record me.

That.

The woman’s voice.

Ryan already knew his mother’s presence on those nights mattered.

“What did you find?” Claire asked him.

He stared at the floor.

“A ledger.”

“When?”

“Four months ago.”

Before the abuse escalated.

Inside Margaret’s study, Ryan had found payments to physicians, fertility clinics, private investigators—and someone named E. HALE.

Elaine Hale.

Claire’s mother.

Payments continued for seven years after Elaine supposedly died.

Claire stopped breathing.

First Thomas’s hidden twin.

Now this.

“Are you telling me my mother is alive?”

Ryan shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

The last payment was made two weeks ago.

Claire looked at the transfer destination.

Richmond, Virginia.

Then a message arrived from Daniel.

DO NOT GO LOOKING FOR ELAINE.

A second followed.

THE WOMAN TAKING THOSE PAYMENTS ISN’T YOUR MOTHER.

Claire typed:

WHO IS SHE?

Daniel answered:

MY DAUGHTER.

Claire stared.

Daniel had another child.

May you like

A daughter Claire had never known.

And Margaret had been secretly paying her for years.
