Chapter 1 - The Voice Under the Recording

The front door clicked shut behind Margaret.

Then she turned the deadbolt.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Claire stood beside the bathroom doorway with one hand beneath her seven-month belly. Ryan still held her phone, but he wasn’t looking at Claire anymore.

He was staring at his mother.

Margaret placed the grocery bags on the kitchen counter.

“You were supposed to make her leave voluntarily.”

Claire felt the room change around her.

“What?”

Ryan backed away from Margaret.

“Claire, don’t listen to her.”

Margaret gave her son a disappointed look.

“You had months.”

“Why do you need me gone before the baby is born?” Claire asked.

Margaret’s eyes moved toward Claire’s stomach.

Not her face.

Her stomach.

“That depends,” she said quietly, “on how much Ryan has told you.”

“About what?”

Ryan grabbed Claire’s overnight bag.

“We’re leaving.”

Margaret laughed.

It was the first time Claire had heard that sound without warmth inside it.

“Now you want to protect her?”

Ryan froze.

Claire looked between them.

The recordings.

For weeks, she had believed they documented one nightmare: her husband’s cruelty after dark.

But beneath one recording was another voice.

Margaret’s.

Giving instructions.

Ryan looked at Claire.

“Who did you send the files to?”

“Why?”

“Because if you sent them to the wrong person, they already know you found out.”

“Found out what?”

He opened his mouth.

Margaret answered instead.

“That your husband has been lying about why he married you.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

Ryan shouted, “Stop!”

Margaret smiled.

“Did he ever tell you where he was working the first time he saw you?”

Claire remembered.

A charity fundraiser.

Ryan had approached her beside the dessert table.

He’d joked about hating champagne.

Three months later, they were engaged.

“No.”

“He wasn’t a guest,” Margaret said. “He was watching you.”

Claire stared at Ryan.

“Is that true?”

Ryan’s silence answered first.

Then he whispered:

“Yes.”

Claire stepped backward.

“You were following me?”

“Before I knew you.”

“That sentence makes no sense.”

“It will.”

Margaret reached into her handbag.

Ryan immediately moved between them.

“Don’t.”

She removed an envelope.

Not a weapon.

A photograph.

She placed it on the counter.

Claire recognized herself at nineteen.

Beside her stood her father, Thomas Hale, who had died eleven years earlier.

Behind them was another man.

Ryan.

Much younger.

Claire picked up the photograph with trembling fingers.

“You knew my father?”

Ryan nodded.

“Why?”

“He hired me.”

“For what?”

Ryan looked at Margaret.

“To find out whether you were really his daughter.”

Silence.

Claire almost laughed because the sentence was too absurd to process.

“My father raised me.”

“I know.”

“What are you talking about?”

Ryan looked toward her stomach.

“Your father suspected something about your biological family.”

Margaret interrupted.

“He suspected something about the child you might someday have.”

Claire’s hand instinctively covered her belly.

Then the baby kicked.

Margaret watched the movement.

And Claire finally understood something that frightened her more than Ryan’s violence ever had.

Margaret hadn’t come because Claire was escaping.

May you like

She had come because the recordings had been sent.

Someone had been waiting for Claire to discover the truth.
