Chapter 6 - The Other Daughter

Her name was Evelyn Hale.
Twenty-nine.
Claire’s half-sister.
Daniel’s daughter from a relationship after Claire was born.
Margaret discovered Evelyn when she was twelve.
Then paid for her schooling.
Housing.
Medical training.
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“What does she do?”
Daniel answered:
“Obstetrics.”
Evelyn was an OB-GYN.
Not Claire’s regular doctor.
But she worked within the same hospital network.
Claire immediately requested a complete access audit of her medical records.
Someone had opened her prenatal chart eleven times from a satellite clinic she had never visited.
Credentials:
Dr. Evelyn Hale.
Claire felt violated all over again.
“What was she looking for?”
Fetal growth.
Blood results.
Genetic screening.
Appointment notes.
Everything.
Police located Evelyn.
She didn’t hide.
She arrived with an attorney and one sentence:
“Margaret wasn’t paying me to monitor Claire.”
“Then why?”
“To monitor Ryan.”
Claire stared.
Evelyn had initially accepted Margaret’s money for school.
Later she discovered the experiment.
She secretly contacted Thomas.
Then Daniel.
For years, she had been feeding information to both sides.
“Why access my pregnancy chart?”
“Because Ryan’s name appeared on another patient.”
“What patient?”
Evelyn slid a document across the table.
A prenatal genetic consultation from eight years earlier.
Father:
Ryan Mercer.
Mother:
Unknown—confidential donor arrangement.
Claire looked at Ryan.
He stared at the paper.
“I’ve never seen that.”
DNA eventually supported him.
He hadn’t fathered a child eight years ago.
His stored genetic sample had been used.
Margaret had attempted the Hale-Bennett pairing before Claire ever became pregnant.
With someone else.
The pregnancy failed early.
Claire became nauseated.
Ryan whispered:
“My mother stole my DNA?”
“Yes.”
His face collapsed.
Again, Claire saw the two truths.
Ryan had been exploited.
Ryan had abused her.
One did not cancel the other.
Evelyn continued.
“When Margaret learned Claire was pregnant naturally, she became terrified.”
“Why terrified? Isn’t this what she wanted?”
“Because the earlier experiment produced something unexpected.”
“What?”
“A genetic abnormality?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Evelyn looked at Claire.
“Evidence the Bennett variant was never Ryan’s.”
Silence.
“What does that mean?”
“The samples Margaret had tracked since Ryan’s childhood were mislabeled.”
Margaret had built half her experiment on a false assumption.
Ryan didn’t carry the complementary variant.
Someone else did.
“Who?”
Evelyn hesitated.
“That’s why Margaret wanted Claire away from Ryan before birth.”
“Who is the actual carrier?”
“Someone close enough that she feared Claire’s baby might expose what happened.”
Claire felt the child move.
“Who?”
Evelyn looked toward the door.
“Ryan’s father.”
Claire frowned.
Ryan’s father, William Mercer, died when Ryan was fourteen.
Evelyn shook her head.
“William wasn’t Ryan’s biological father.”
Ryan went motionless.
Then Evelyn said:
“Daniel Hale was.”
Claire’s world stopped.
“No.”
Daniel was Claire’s biological father.
If he were Ryan’s biological father too—
Claire and Ryan would be half-siblings.
The room erupted.
Evelyn raised both hands.
“No. Listen to me. That is what Margaret wanted everyone to believe.”
Claire could barely breathe.
“Then what is true?”
“Daniel’s sample was placed in Ryan’s file.”
“By whom?”
“I don’t know.”
Another swapped identity.
Another manipulated record.
Then Evelyn said:
“But I know who Ryan’s real father is.”
Ryan whispered:
“Who?”
Evelyn looked at Margaret through the observation glass.
“Ask her why Thomas Hale paid her $600,000 the year Ryan was born.”
Claire turned toward Margaret.
Margaret’s face said everything.
Thomas.
Claire’s adoptive father.
The man who raised her.
Could he have been Ryan’s biological father?
If so, Claire and Ryan were not biologically related.
But Thomas had known exactly who Ryan was when he hired him years later.

Which meant Thomas had placed his own secret son near Claire.
And never told either of them.
