Chapter 6 - The storm's convergence

The silence in the industrial penthouse was heavy, broken only by the rhythmic drumming of the storm outside against the steel shutters. Dante had retreated to a small, adjoining room to monitor a secure radio frequency, leaving Isabella alone in the main living space. She knew her window of opportunity was terrifyingly narrow. She dropped the heavy wool blanket, her damp champagne dress clinging to her frame, and moved swiftly across the cold concrete floor toward the canvas drop cloth.
She pulled the canvas aside, revealing the old, analog landline phone. Her delicate hands trembled as she lifted the heavy receiver to her ear. There was a faint, crackling dial tone. It was live.
Isabella didn't dial Vincent's primary number; she knew the rogue faction or the federal authorities would be actively monitoring his known cellular network. Instead, she punched in a complex, twelve-digit sequence—a blind drop number Vincent had forced her to memorize on the night of their wedding. He had told her it was the absolute last resort, a frequency that routed through a series of offshore ghost servers before triggering a silent alarm on a proprietary device he carried at all times.
The line connected with a series of harsh, mechanical clicks.
Sector Seven. Authenticate, a digitized, automated voice prompted.
Isabella swallowed hard, her hazel eyes darting toward the adjoining room. Obsidian Rose, she whispered, providing the clearance phrase.
Signal locked. Transmitting coordinates.
Before the automated voice could finish, a large, leather-clad hand clamped down over the receiver, physically breaking the connection by depressing the cradle.
Isabella gasped, spinning around. Dante stood directly behind her, his muscular physique towering over her fragile frame. He had moved with absolute silence. His sharp, predatory eyes stared down at her, his face an unreadable mask of cold granite.
I told you there was no digital footprint, Isabella, Dante said, his voice a low, vibrating threat. I didn't say there were no analog backdoors.
Isabella shrank back against the concrete wall, entirely trapped. She braced herself for the violence, expecting the rival boss to punish her for the betrayal. But Dante simply reached down, pulled the phone cord entirely out of the wall jack, and tossed the broken wire onto the floor.
You just sent a blind ping to his ghost server, Dante observed, turning his back on her and walking back toward the center of the room. He didn't lock her in a closet. He didn't raise his hand.
Why did you let me make the call? Isabella asked, her voice shaking, profound confusion warring with her terror. You stood there and let me authenticate the signal before you hung up.
Dante stopped, his broad shoulders rising and falling with a heavy sigh. Because he needs to know you are alive. If Vincent believes you are dead, he will burn this entire city to ash blindly. He will make mistakes. He will walk directly into the guns of the mutiny. But a blind ping gives him a direction. It focuses the wolf.
Isabella stared at him, the intricate, terrifying depth of the man slowly revealing itself. You wanted him to find us. This isn't a safehouse to hide from the rogue faction. This is a fortress you built to force a meeting with my husband.
Dante turned his head slightly, a dark, grim smile touching his lips. Vincent is a proud, stubborn king, Isabella. He would never sit at a table with me to discuss an alliance, not even to save his own empire. The only way to force him into a room with me without drawing weapons is to hold the one thing he values more than his pride.
You are using me as bait to force a truce, Isabella realized, the sheer audacity of the plan leaving her breathless.
I am using you to save his life, Dante corrected coldly. The faction that attacked the hotel wasn't organized by his underboss. The underboss is a moron. He doesn't have the tactical capacity to bypass my sentries or Vincent's inner circle. The mutiny is being funded by an external power. A shadow broker who wants to swallow both our territories.
Before Isabella could process the terrifying expansion of the war, a heavy, concussive boom echoed from the lower levels of the high-rise. The steel floor vibrated violently beneath their feet.
Dante’s eyes narrowed, his hand dropping to the heavy pistol concealed beneath his charcoal suit. The signal was received.
May you like
Isabella’s heart hammered against her ribs. Vincent? she breathed.
Dante drew his weapon, the metallic click echoing in the raw concrete room. Vincent, he confirmed. Or the people who intercepted the signal before he did. Stay behind me, Isabella. The storm is finally here.
