Chapter 2 - The velvet deception

The red emergency lights cast long, distorted shadows across the cream-marble floor. Isabella’s breath came in shallow, jagged gasps as she stared up at Dante. The rival boss did not move to silence her physically; his mere presence in the confined space was a suffocating weight. His sharp, predatory eyes locked onto hers, devoid of the manic violence she had come to expect from her husband's enemies. Instead, there was a chilling, clinical patience.
Pick up the phone, Dante instructed quietly, never breaking eye contact. Tell him the room is empty. Tell him you are hiding in the service elevator.
Isabella’s mind raced, adrenaline flooding her veins. Her champagne-colored satin dress felt heavy, clinging to her trembling frame. The voice of her husband, the man who had promised to burn the world to the ground before letting anyone touch her, continued to emanate from the dropped device.
Bella, answer me! Vincent's voice barked, the sharp edge of panic finally bleeding through his iron-clad composure.
Why should I trust you? Isabella whispered, her voice shaking as she remained huddled on the toilet seat. You have tried to kill him twice this year.
Because if I wanted you dead, you would already be bleeding on this marble, Dante replied smoothly. There is a hit squad moving through the lobby right now, Isabella. They are not my men, and they are not your husband's men. They belong to his underboss. Vincent’s inner circle has collapsed. He sent me because I am the only man left in this city he knows cannot be bought by his own crew. Now pick up the phone.
The terrifying logic of his words paralyzed her. Vincent had been paranoid for weeks, isolating himself in his study, constantly auditing his own lieutenants. The murmurs of a fractured syndicate had haunted their penthouse. With trembling fingers, Isabella reached down and retrieved the phone. She brought it to her soft pink lips, squeezing her enormous hazel eyes shut.
Vincent, she breathed, her voice cracking. The room is clear. I’m moving toward the service elevator in the east corridor.
Stay exactly there. I am two minutes away, Vincent commanded, the relief palpable in his deep baritone.
Dante reached out, his black leather glove enveloping her delicate hand. He took the phone from her grasp and, with a swift, brutal motion, crushed the device against the brass hinge of the stall door. The screen shattered, severing the connection instantly.
We don't have two minutes, Dante said. Follow me, and stay perfectly silent.
He turned, his muscular frame moving with astonishing grace for a man of his size. Isabella hesitated for only a fraction of a second before the survival instinct took over. She stood, her elegant heels clicking softly as she followed him out of the restroom. Dante bypassed the main hallway entirely, pushing open a heavy, unmarked maintenance door that led into the dark, raw concrete veins of the luxury hotel.
The air was damp and smelled of industrial cleaner and dust. They descended a narrow spiral staircase, plunging deeper into the subterranean levels. Isabella struggled to keep pace, her champagne dress catching on the rough concrete walls. Dante did not offer his hand, nor did he look back, moving with the singular focus of a predator navigating its own hunting grounds.
They emerged into the rain-slicked loading dock just as a fleet of unmarked black SUVs screeched to a halt at the front entrance of the hotel above them. Through the pouring rain, Isabella saw heavily armed men pouring into the lobby. They did not wear the recognizable insignias of Vincent’s loyalists; they moved like a paramilitary strike team.

Dante opened the heavy steel door of a waiting armored vehicle parked in the shadows of the alley. Get in, he ordered.
As Isabella climbed into the dark, leather-lined interior of the car, the cold rain soaking her hair and dress, she looked back toward the glittering facade of the hotel. Vincent was walking into a trap. She had lied to him, sending him toward the east corridor while a rogue hit squad secured the building. She sank into the plush leather seat, pulling her knees to her chest, realizing she had just traded a gilded cage for a labyrinth of shadows, guided by the very wolf she had spent her marriage fearing.
