Chapter 1 - The crimson sanctuary

The grand ballroom of the Manhattan luxury hotel was a masterpiece of old-world opulence, a sweeping expanse of gilded ceilings and towering crystal chandeliers that bathed the city's elite in a warm, cinematic glow. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the low, dangerous hum of whispered alliances. Isabella stood near the edge of the crowded floor, her champagne-colored satin evening dress catching the light with her every trembling breath. At twenty-seven, she was breathtakingly beautiful, possessing delicate porcelain features and enormous hazel eyes that currently scanned the room with mounting dread. Her long silky dark-brown hair fell perfectly over her shoulders, but beneath the flawless exterior, a suffocating panic was taking root. She had seen a face in the crowd—a face that belonged to a ghost from a rival syndicate, a man who had no business being inside her husband’s territory.
Without waiting for Vincent to return from his meeting in the upper suites, Isabella turned and slipped through the heavy mahogany doors, desperate for a moment of quiet to steady her racing heart. She navigated the dimly lit luxury hallway, her elegant heels clicking softly against the thick carpet, until she reached the women's restroom. She pushed the door open, stepping into an elegant cream-marble sanctuary. Polished brass fixtures gleamed under the warm vanity lights. It was entirely empty. She moved toward the farthest narrow bathroom stall, locked the flimsy metal latch, and sank down onto the closed toilet seat, pulling her knees tightly against her chest. Her beautiful face was suddenly wet with tears. She covered her soft pink lips with her hand to suppress her sobbing, the sheer terror of her world finally crashing down around her.
Then, the ambient noise of the hotel faded into a chilling silence. Under the gap of the stall door, a pair of immaculate, glossy black leather shoes slowly stepped into view and stopped perfectly still. Isabella froze. The breath died in her throat. Her trembling hands scrambled for her phone, dialing the only number that mattered. She pressed the device against her ear, praying for a connection.
Vincent… he's here, Isabella whispered, the words barely audible.
Miles away, weaving through the rain-soaked city streets in his luxury black car, Vincent pressed his phone to his ear. At thirty-nine, the extraordinarily handsome mafia boss was a force of absolute, terrifying nature. His broad-shouldered, muscular physique was clad in an immaculate black Italian designer suit and an open-collar black silk shirt. Beautiful black tattoos crept up his neck and across his hands, gripping the steering wheel. His piercing gray eyes darkened instantly.
Lock the door. I'm coming, Vincent commanded, his voice a low, lethal rumble of absolute protection.
Isabella looked desperately toward the flimsy metal latch. Her fingers shook violently as she reached out to check it, the metal cold against her skin. Please hurry, she pleaded into the receiver.
Baby, listen to my voice. Stay quiet, Vincent said firmly, accelerating his vehicle. The neon lights of the city reflected across the rain-streaked windows and illuminated his tattooed hand gripping the wheel.
Inside the restroom, Isabella slowly raised her tear-filled hazel eyes. The black shoes outside her stall had disappeared. For one agonizing, deceptive second, she thought she was safe. Then, a dark, heavy shadow passed deliberately across the narrow gap beneath the door. The metal latch began to tremble. Isabella gripped the door with both hands, her knuckles turning white. Suddenly, the warm vanity lighting clicked off, replaced by the ominous, blood-red glow of the hotel's emergency illumination system.
I'm almost there, Vincent promised through the speaker, the sound of the roaring engine behind his voice.
Isabella heard a faint, terrifying click. The latch gave way. The stall door moved slowly inward. She recoiled, pressing her back against the cool marble tiles. Standing just beyond the opening, his powerful silhouette filling the red-lit frame, was Dante. The forty-two-year-old rival mafia boss possessed a muscular physique, shaved dark hair, and sharp predatory eyes. Intricate tattoos covered his neck and arms beneath his expensive charcoal suit, and his hands were clad in black leather gloves. He looked down at the fragile woman cowering before him. But instead of attacking, he slowly raised a leather-clad finger to his lips.
Don't scream. Your husband sent me, Dante whispered, his voice cold and calculating.
Isabella's eyes widened in absolute disbelief. Her phone slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering against the marble floor. From the dropped speaker, Vincent's voice echoed in the small space.
May you like
Bella? Who's with you? Vincent demanded.
Isabella stared between the towering, terrifying figure of Dante and the glowing screen of her phone, entirely paralyzed, unable to tell which man was weaving the fatal lie.
