Chapter 10 - The threshold of tomorrow

The unmarked helicopter touched down heavily on the private helipad of an isolated, heavily fortified medical facility deep in the upstate mountains, far beyond the reach of the Architect’s corporate hit squads. Within hours, Vincent’s wounds were meticulously sutured and bound by discreet, highly paid physicians who knew better than to ask questions. The adrenaline of the night faded, leaving a heavy, quiet exhaustion over the survivors.

Isabella sat by the window of the private recovery suite, wearing a simple, soft gray sweater provided by the clinic, a stark contrast to the ruined champagne satin gown she had discarded. The dawn was breaking over the mountains, casting a pale, beautiful light across her delicate porcelain features. The terror of the night was over, but the reality of the war they had initiated settled deeply into her bones.

Vincent lay in the hospital bed, his broad, muscular chest wrapped in thick white bandages, the black tattoos on his neck stark against his pale skin. He was watching her, his piercing gray eyes filled with a quiet, fierce devotion.

You should be resting, Vincent murmured, his voice a low, raspy rumble.

I don't think I'll ever sleep again, Isabella replied softly, turning away from the window to look at the man she loved. Her hazel eyes were clear, the fragility permanently burned away by the gunfire on the roof. You and Dante. You are going to go after the Architect, aren't you?

Vincent nodded slowly, the mafia boss returning to the forefront of his mind. We have to. He declared war on our entire existence. Dante and I will consolidate our territories. We will pool our resources, our men, and our intelligence. We will tear down his corporate shell companies, find out who he really is, and bury him. The city belongs to us.

The heavy oak door of the suite opened. Dante stepped into the room, his expensive charcoal suit replaced by functional dark tactical gear. The intimidating rival boss looked at Vincent, a silent communication passing between the two men who had bled for each other once again.

The transport is ready, Vincent, Dante announced. I am heading back to the city to rally the northern captains. I will send my lieutenants to coordinate with your remaining loyalists. The purge of the rogue faction begins at noon.

Vincent nodded sharply. I will be on my feet in two days. Do not initiate the main offensive against the Architect’s financial hubs until I am there.

Dante turned toward the door, pausing for a moment. He looked at Isabella, offering a slight, respectful nod. You are braver than you look, Isabella. Keep him alive.

As Dante walked out, closing the door behind him, Isabella felt a strange, cold intuition prickle at the back of her neck. During the chaotic escape on the roof, when she had dove for the dropped shotgun, she had also grabbed a heavy, encrypted mobile phone that had fallen from the tactical vest of the lead operative she had shot. She had slipped it into the pocket of Dante's trench coat, which she was wearing, intending to hand it to Vincent later for intelligence extraction.

She pulled the cracked, bloody phone from her pocket now. Vincent, I found this on the operative on the roof. It might have the Architect's communications logs.

Vincent sat up, ignoring the pain in his shoulder, his eyes narrowing with intense interest. Bring it here. Let me see if the biometric lock is active.

Isabella walked to the bed, handing him the device. The screen was spider-webbed, but as she pressed the power button, the phone woke up. The lock screen did not display a generic corporate logo or a blank background.

It displayed a high-resolution, candid photograph.

Isabella gasped, her blood running completely cold. She stared at the screen, her heart dropping into the pit of her stomach.

The photograph wasn't a picture of Vincent, or Dante, or a map of the city.

It was a picture of Isabella. But it was not a recent picture. It was a photograph taken over ten years ago, long before she had ever met Vincent, back when she was a teenager living in a foster home in Chicago. She was smiling, standing next to an older man whose face was partially obscured by shadow.

Vincent stared at the photograph, the color draining from his rugged face. He looked up at his wife, his gray eyes filled with a sudden, terrifying confusion. Bella... who is that man with you?

Isabella’s trembling fingers touched her soft pink lips. Her mind raced, tearing through suppressed memories she had buried a lifetime ago. The man in the shadows, the man who had funded her foster home, the man who had mysteriously paid for her education before disappearing entirely from her life.

It’s my father, Isabella whispered, the horrifying realization crashing over her like a tidal wave. I haven't seen him since I was sixteen.

Vincent looked back at the phone, analyzing the tactical reality. The Architect didn't target me because I refused to launder his money, Bella, Vincent stated, his voice a hollow, chilling echo in the quiet room. He targeted me because I married his daughter.

May you like

The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence. The war wasn't about territory or corporate monopolies. The hit squad at the hotel hadn't been sent by a rogue underboss to assassinate Vincent; they had been sent by a phantom from Isabella’s forgotten past to forcibly retrieve her from the underworld king who had stolen her.

Isabella stared out the window at the rising sun, the beautiful dawn suddenly feeling like the terrifying threshold of an entirely new, infinitely darker nightmare. The screen cut to black, leaving the billionaire and his wife entirely unaware of the true monster waiting for them in the shadows of tomorrow.
