Chapter 9 - The Two Forged Names
Independent handwriting analysis supported Margaret.
Peter Shaw’s preparer signature was forged.
Electronic metadata also showed document created while Peter was overseas at a conference.
His credentials were used remotely.
Thus Peter had been framed alongside Ethan.
Why?
The authorization attempted to move a liability reserve from Bennett Residential Services into a newly formed project account.
No money disappeared.
But if approved, accounting responsibility could later appear shared between Peter and Ethan.
The board blocked it.
Jonathan quietly corrected.
Adam investigated.
Then Peter resigned.
Why resign if innocent?
Because he believed Jonathan suspected him and refused endure internal scandal.
He signed confidential separation agreement.
Not admission.
Margaret spent years furious.
Peter maintained he knew who forged documents but would not say because exposing person would destroy Bennett family.
Before death he finally told Margaret:
“Adam knew too.”
Who?
Peter refused name even then.
But he gave Margaret small box.
Inside was Adam’s old business card and note:
THE WATCH IS THE ONLY THING THAT WILL MAKE ELEANOR OPEN THE VIDEO.
How did Margaret get Adam’s watch?
She hired private investigator to retrieve it from Nathan? “stolen” illegal. She admitted arranging theft through intermediary, serious offense, and surrendered evidence. Not heroic.
Her goal:
force reopening Continuity Review.
She anonymously sent watch to Martin because she knew Adam mentored him.
She did not tell Martin to involve Lily.
She sent:
Wear this if you want B-17 opened.
Martin invented “demonstration.”
Thus layers separated.
Margaret triggered watch.
Martin staged confrontation.
Claire accepted money and escalated abuse.
Eleanor knowingly filmed rather than immediately intervening.
None could blame another for own choices.
But Margaret had another item.
Peter’s copy of Thanksgiving video.
Higher quality than Jonathan archive.
At 18:42, Adam and Peter spoke in foyer.
Audio faint but recoverable.
Peter:
“I didn’t sign it.”
Adam:
“I know.”
Peter:
“Does Jonathan?”
Adam:
“Not yet.”
Peter:
“And Ethan?”
“He cannot know until we understand why.”
Then Peter said:
“She was trying to protect him.”
Ethan leaned closer.
She.
Eleanor?
Claire was thirteen.
Who else?
Ethan’s grandmother?
Family employee?
Unknown.
Video continued.
A woman crossed mirror behind Adam.
Face obscured by glare.
She carried stack of papers.
Eleanor looked at silhouette.
Her breath stopped.
Maya noticed.
“You recognize her.”
Eleanor shook head too quickly.
Ethan stood.
“Mom.”
“I can't be sure.”
“Who?”
Eleanor whispered:
“Your grandmother.”
Ethan’s paternal grandmother, Evelyn Bennett.
She died in 2012 at eighty-one.
In 2004 she served as chair of Bennett Family Trust oversight committee.
She had access.
Could she forge Ethan?
Possibly.
Motive to protect him?
Maybe.
But why create documents making Ethan appear responsible?
Margaret Shaw said Peter believed forged approvals were defensive.
Defensive against what?
B-17 financial files showed Bennett Residential Services facing lawsuit over failed assisted-living property acquisition.
A personal guarantee existed.
Signed by Jonathan Bennett.
If valid, Jonathan faced major exposure.
Someone tried create documents suggesting project had later been assumed by another internal entity involving Ethan and Peter.
Could Evelyn have tried protect Jonathan by shifting blame toward grandson?
That hardly protected Ethan.
Unless she expected documents never used, only leverage in settlement.
Still reckless.
Then Maya found original guarantee.
Jonathan’s signature was also forged.
Three forged names.
Jonathan.
Ethan.
Peter.
Suddenly theory collapsed.
Someone wasn't shifting Jonathan’s real liability.
They were manufacturing an entire false chain.
Why?
Adam’s missing sentence mattered:
THE PERSON USING ETHAN’S NAME WAS NOT TRYING TO STEAL FROM HIM.
THEY WERE TRYING TO KEEP—
Margaret produced Peter’s handwritten completion.
—THEY WERE TRYING TO KEEP THE HOUSE FROM BEING SOLD.
Ethan looked around mansion.
“The house?”
