Chapter 14 - What Eleanor Cut From Thanksgiving
Eleanor finally stopped denying.
The original Thanksgiving 2004 tape was ninety-three minutes.
Jonathan’s archived copy:
eighty-six.
Seven minutes missing.
Eleanor had removed them before family media digitization.
Why?
Those seven minutes showed Rachel confessing.
Not to police.
Not to Jonathan.
To Evelyn.
Eleanor accidentally recorded conversation from adjacent room.
Rachel admitted sending Andrew’s false demonstration drafts to prospective buyer.
Evelyn was furious.
She ordered Rachel retrieve them.
Too late.
Peter had already been implicated.
Ethan’s name already appeared.
Evelyn said:
“You used an eighteen-year-old boy as camouflage.”
Rachel cried:
“I thought nobody would believe the papers. I only needed sale delayed.”
Evelyn:
“And if they did believe them?”
Rachel had no answer.
That was clearest evidence of Rachel’s responsibility.
Why did Eleanor cut it?
At Evelyn’s request.
Evelyn begged her to protect Rachel while Adam investigated full context.
Eleanor agreed temporarily.
Temporary became twenty-two years.
Jonathan eventually learned Rachel’s role through Adam.
Corporate records corrected.
But Eleanor kept original recording.
Why not reveal when current anonymous campaign began?
Because it also contained Eleanor saying something damaging.
After Rachel left room, Eleanor told Evelyn:
“If this ever comes out, I can use it to make sure Rachel never controls trust.”
She had preserved confession partly as leverage.
She never actually used it.
But she feared admitting she had secretly held compromising video for decades.
That explained obsession with filming.
Evidence was Eleanor’s form of control.
In 2004 she recorded Rachel.
In present she recorded Claire.
Both times she convinced herself documentation justified waiting.
With Lily, delay became morally indefensible.
Now every central question could be answered.
But Maya insisted evidence be independently verified before anyone declared case closed.
They reconstructed watch.

Adam Reed’s original.
Stolen from Nathan Reed at Margaret Shaw’s direction.
Delivered anonymously to Martin Vale.
Martin accessed Ethan’s old repair images through Raven Hill audit archive.
He added matching bezel scratch.
He wore watch during staged confrontation specifically so Ethan would believe another man possessed “his” watch and investigate.
Serial A-08145:
Originally purchased by Jonathan alongside Adam’s.
Initially considered for Andrew after cooperation.
Never given.
Later repurposed as Ethan’s twenty-first birthday gift.
Scratched by Ethan years later.
No duplicate Ethan.
No secret brother.
No mysterious physical rescue.
The “man who saved him” language referred to Andrew helping clear Ethan from false documents, though Jonathan ultimately chose not give him watch.

Martin Vale.
Who handed Claire rope and toy gun:
Martin.
Who paid Claire:
Martin through Raven Hill funds he controlled.
Who selected Lily:

Why did Eleanor say watch beginning:
Because she knew current sting was designed to reopen 2004.
Everything fit.
Ethan stared at his mother across interview room.
“One thing doesn't.”
“What?”
“You knew Martin’s plan involved watch. Why act surprised when I noticed?”
Eleanor answered:
“Because I didn't know he had scratched it to match yours.”
That detail was Martin’s.
He wanted Ethan—not merely Rachel—to believe for several seconds that impossible duplicate existed.
“Why?”
Martin answered from separate interview:
“Confusion makes people look closer.”
Maya’s expression hardened.
“And that sentence is exactly why you should never have designed a stunt around a child.”
Then Nathan Reed called Ethan.
Adam’s estate contained one more sealed item.
Not part of Continuity Review.
Different date.
Different case.
Nathan had almost ignored it because label had nothing to do with watches, Rachel or mansion sale.
Ethan asked what label said.
Nathan read:
CEDAR HOUSE — 1991.
Ethan closed eyes.
“Is this connected to Lily?”
“No.”
“Rachel’s forged documents?”
“No.”
“Adam’s watch?”
“No.”
“Then leave it sealed until we finish this.”
For once, Ethan refused chase next mystery before current one was resolved.
