Chapter 13 - Eleanor’s Part in the Plan
Eleanor confessed.
Martin contacted her four days earlier.
He told her Adam’s watch had resurfaced and B-17 contained proof of who used Ethan’s name in 2004.
Eleanor wanted truth because she had spent two decades suspecting Rachel but never knew.
Martin proposed confrontation staged on camera.
Original plan did not involve Lily.
It involved Claire pretending to destroy old family papers while Eleanor filmed.
Ethan would arrive, see Adam’s watch on Martin and demand explanation.
Then Martin would hand over B-17 key.
Why did plan change?
Claire.
She wanted more money.
She suggested Ethan would react more strongly if Lily was part of scene.
Martin initially refused.
Then reconsidered.
Eleanor said absolutely not.
Yet on night itself, Martin arrived with rope and toy gun.
Eleanor saw.
She should have stopped everything immediately.
Instead she believed ropes would be used as visual prop around empty chair.
Then Lily entered unexpectedly from upstairs looking for Eleanor.
Claire said:
“Perfect.”
Martin told her no.
Recovered video proved it.
Claire asked Lily to sit.
Lily refused.
Claire grabbed her.
At that moment Eleanor could have intervened.
She didn't.
She kept filming.
Martin said:
“Eleanor, stop this.”
Eleanor answered:
“If we stop now Ethan won't believe what kind of people he's protecting.”
Who did she mean?
Rachel.
Claire.
Perhaps whole Bennett circle.
Martin then made another terrible decision.
Instead of physically stopping Claire or calling Ethan/police, he handed Claire rope while telling her:
“Loose. One loop. That's it.”
Why hand it over?
He later admitted he thought controlled continuation would preserve sting.
Claire ignored limit.
She added multiple loops.
Lily cried.
Martin told her stop.
Claire demanded payment.
Eleanor told her keep going because camera now captured wrongdoing.
Martin left to call Hayes anonymously and position evidence.
Then Claire fired dart.
Eleanor continued filming.
So Lily’s statement “Grandma made her do it” was understandable.
Eleanor did not invent Lily version of plan, but once it began she encouraged Claire to continue because she wanted evidence.
She prioritized exposing family secret over protecting granddaughter.
That was central moral truth.
Ethan could barely speak.
“You watched her cry.”
“Yes.”
“You could have untied her.”
“Yes.”
“You didn't.”
“No.”
Eleanor had no defense left.
Then why remote deletion during police viewing?
Martin denied.
Eleanor denied.
Claire denied.
Margaret denied.
Rachel?
Technical trace led to Bennett House security server.
The deletion command came from an automated privacy protocol Jonathan installed years earlier.
When Eleanor’s phone connected to mansion Wi-Fi and certain old Raven Hill device signatures appeared, server flagged video for archival quarantine.
Not actual deletion.
Jonathan had configured protocol to protect Continuity Review files from unauthorized syncing.
That explained why recording disappeared and camera? Wait prompt had no rotating security camera, that's previous story. Here phone deleted. Current message on phone "NO MORE REWINDING" we invented. Automated protocol couldn't send ominous text unless someone. Need resolve text sender.
Video quarantine was automatic, but messages were sent by Martin using scheduled burner? He admitted later perhaps. He had scheduled NO MORE REWINDING and ETHAN ALREADY KNOWS WHO HE IS to fire when officers likely watching, designed to intensify urgency. He claimed performance tactic. That makes him more culpable/manipulative.
Maya found scheduled-message service purchased by Martin.
He admitted.
“I wanted Ethan to keep pushing.”
Ethan stared.
“You really thought turning this into theater would help?”
“No,” Martin said quietly. “I thought it would make it impossible to bury.”
“And Lily?”
Martin lowered eyes.
“She became part of something she never should have been near.”
Exactly.
Then Eleanor’s recovered recording contained last unexplained segment before Lily entered.
Martin held Adam’s watch toward camera.
Eleanor said:
“Rachel will recognize it.”
Martin answered:
“Rachel isn't the person I need to recognize it.”
“Who is?”
“Ethan.”
“Why Ethan?”
“Because Adam left him something.”
“What?”
Martin looked directly toward camera.
“A final page.”
But Ethan had never received Adam’s final page.
At least he thought he hadn’t.
Nathan Reed searched Adam’s estate instructions.
There it was:
PAGE 17 — DELIVERED TO E.B., APRIL 2019.
April 2019.
One month before Jonathan Bennett died.
Ethan had received package then.
He remembered.
His father gave him sealed envelope during hospital visit.
Ethan never opened it.
Jonathan said:
“Not unless the house starts lying again.”
At time Ethan thought medication made father confused.
He placed envelope in mansion study.
Forgot.
Now he ran to study safe.
Envelope remained.
Untouched.
Inside:
Adam Reed’s missing final page.
At top:
CONTINUITY REVIEW — FINAL RESPONSIBILITY.
Ethan unfolded it.
First line:
ANDREW CREATED THE FALSE DRAFTS AT EVELYN’S REQUEST.
Second:
RACHEL DEPLOYED THEM WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION.
Already known.
Third line made Ethan sit down.
ELEANOR RECORDED THE CONFESSION ON THANKSGIVING NIGHT.
Ethan looked toward his mother.
