Chapter 6 - Two Investigations
Jonathan suspected Eleanor.
Eleanor suspected Jonathan.
Neither trusted the other enough to speak plainly.
That was the Bennett marriage in 2004.
Bennett Residential Services had accumulated liabilities after a failed expansion.
Someone created documents in Ethan’s name apparently designed to shift responsibility toward future generation.
Jonathan believed access originated Eleanor’s office.
Eleanor discovered Jonathan’s private investigation and assumed he intended blame her.
She secretly hired Adam Reed herself.
Adam accepted both engagements but disclosed conflict? Surprisingly yes, via sealed conflict letter both eventually signed. He became neutral investigator.
His conclusion:
Neither Jonathan nor Eleanor forged Ethan’s signature.
Someone else used internal access.
That should have ended mystery.
It didn’t.
Because Adam found purpose was not simply financial theft.
The forged approvals created a false historical record.
Someone wanted future auditors to believe Ethan had been involved in decisions before he actually joined company.
Why?
Protection.
If old liability resurfaced years later, forged papers could muddy responsibility.
Jonathan corrected corporate records and notified counsel.
No charges because perpetrator unidentified and no transfer completed.
But Adam continued privately.
Then Ethan asked Martin:
“What does any of this have to do with Lily?”
“Nothing directly.”
“Then why stage that room?”
Martin shook head.
“I didn’t.”
“Why use Adam’s watch?”
“To make you open B-17.”
“Who wants that?”
“Someone who thinks Adam named the forger.”
Did he?
Maybe.
Final page missing.
Not torn recently.
Removed years earlier.
Martin said page already absent when Adam gave him archive.
So Adam himself likely removed it.
Then Maya received forensic report on Eleanor’s recovered phone footage.
The man who handed rope to Claire had not been digitally inserted.
He was physically present.
Height approximately six feet.
Right-handed.
Dark tailored suit.
Watch deliberately positioned toward camera.
He knew Eleanor was filming.
That mattered.
He wanted watch seen.
Claire admitted he had glanced directly at Eleanor’s phone before handing rope.
“He knew she was recording?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you say that?”
“I was scared.”
“Of him?”
Claire shook head.
“Of Eleanor.”
Eleanor looked stunned.
Claire finally revealed family conflict.
Six weeks earlier Eleanor asked Claire to help identify anonymous sender.
Claire agreed.
Then Eleanor became obsessive, accusing Ethan, staff, former employees.
Claire wanted out.
The hidden man contacted Claire claiming he could prove Eleanor had been lying about 2004.
He offered money for “demonstration” designed to make Eleanor reveal her recording.
Claire accepted.
Why would tying Lily make Eleanor reveal anything?
“He said Eleanor would film instead of stopping us.”
Ethan’s face changed.
The man predicted Eleanor’s behavior perfectly.
He knew her compulsion to document evidence.
He knew she might prioritize proof over immediate intervention.
Claire had allowed herself to participate in testing that prediction.
And Lily paid price.
Then Maya asked:
“Did he tell you to fire dart at Lily?”
Claire lowered eyes.
“No.”
“Did he tell you to tighten ropes?”
“No.”
“Did he tell you to tell her to stop crying?”
“No.”
Those were Claire’s choices.
The hidden organizer had engineered dangerous situation, but Claire escalated cruelty herself.
Eleanor had also failed to intervene.
Multiple culpabilities.
Then Lily, now staying safely away from mansion with a trusted caregiver, remembered something.
Before Claire tied her, hidden man had knelt near her.
He had not touched her.
He said:
“Your dad will be here soon.”
Lily noticed his watch.
She asked:
“Why do you have Daddy’s watch?”
The man answered:
“Because your grandpa gave it to me.”
That pointed directly to Adam Reed.
But Adam was dead.
Unless Lily misunderstood.
Or man was wearing Adam’s watch.
Martin checked Adam’s estate inventory.
The second Heritage No. 8 had disappeared after Adam’s death.
Last person who signed property release:
Adam’s son.
Name:
Nathan Reed.
