Chapter 8 - Martin’s Lie
Martin Vale had lied directly to police.
He claimed he had not worn watch.
Claire now identified him as man who handed her rope and toy gun.
Surveillance confirmed Martin entered Bennett property through service gate thirty minutes before Ethan arrived.
He had used legitimate old Raven Hill contractor credential.
Maya arrested him for his role in staged restraint and related offenses.
Martin stopped denying.
“Yes. I gave Claire the rope.”
“Why?”
“To force Ethan to open B-17.”
“You involved a six-year-old.”
“She was never supposed to be hurt.”
Maya stared at him.
“You gave rope and a projectile toy to an adult willing to restrain a child.”
“I told Claire loops had to remain loose. I told her no intimidation.”
“And then you left.”
“Yes.”
“That isn't protection.”
Martin had no answer.
He claimed he expected Eleanor to stop Claire immediately.
In fact that was test.
Adam Reed’s old notes described Eleanor’s 2004 behavior during corporate crisis:
ELEANOR DOCUMENTS FIRST, INTERVENES SECOND.
Martin believed Eleanor had concealed original Thanksgiving footage and possibly final B-17 page.
He wanted prove same pattern publicly.
He engineered scene in which Eleanor would choose filming over intervention.
That was grotesquely unethical.
And it worked.
But why Lily?
Because Ethan would call police instantly.
Martin wanted law enforcement present when Eleanor displayed recording, forcing footage into evidence before family could suppress.
He specifically tipped Officer Hayes because Hayes had investigated an unrelated Bennett House theft months earlier and Martin trusted him.
That explained Hayes envelope.
Martin stole Adam’s watch?
“No.”
He received it anonymously three weeks earlier with instructions:
WEAR THIS IF YOU WANT B-17 OPENED.
Inside package were Ethan repair photographs showing scratch.
Martin personally added matching scratch.
So Martin was hidden man.
But not originator.
He became willing participant in someone else’s plan.
Who sent watch?
Unknown.
Why did Martin cooperate?
He had spent years believing Adam died with unresolved case.
Anonymous sender provided authentic excerpts from Adam’s missing final page.
Martin believed opening B-17 would expose original 2004 forger.
“Did you know Claire would become violent?”
“No.”
“Did you know Eleanor might fail Lily?”
“I suspected.”
“Then you knew enough.”
Again, no exoneration.
Then Ethan asked most important question:
“Who forged my name in 2004?”
Martin looked toward Eleanor.
“I thought your mother did.”
Eleanor flinched.
“But Adam concluded she didn't.”
“Then who?”
“I don't know. Missing page had answer.”
Anonymous sender gave Martin only fragment:
THE PERSON USING ETHAN’S NAME WAS NOT TRYING TO STEAL FROM HIM.
THEY WERE TRYING TO KEEP—
Sentence cut.
Keep what?
A company?
A person?
A secret?
Maya traced anonymous package to courier locker.
Camera showed woman dropping it.
Older.
Gray coat.
Face partially visible.
Eleanor recognized immediately.
“Margaret Shaw.”
Peter Shaw’s widow.
Peter had died in London four years earlier.
Margaret had returned to U.S.
Why possess Adam’s watch?
She shouldn't.
Nathan said watch stolen months after Peter’s death.
Could Margaret have arranged theft?
Possible.
Police located her.
Margaret did not run.
She opened door and said:
“I wondered how long Martin would take.”
“Did you send him Adam Reed’s watch?”
“Yes.”
“Did you have it stolen?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Adam stole something from my husband first.”
“What?”
“His name.”
Ethan frowned.
Margaret handed over document.
A 2004 authorization carrying forged signature:
ETHAN JONATHAN BENNETT.
Below, internal preparer field:
PETER SHAW.
Margaret said:
“Everyone assumed Peter forged Ethan.”
“Did he?”
“No.”
“Then why is his name there?”
“Because someone forged Peter too.”
The 2004 conspiracy had two false signatures.
Ethan’s.

Someone had been constructing evidence against both men.
