Chapter 9 - Ivy Carter Was Never Only the Maid

The Greyhaven Trust existed.

Real.

Legal.

Still active.

My father had transferred its oversight rights into a custodial structure after discovering Harrington beneficiaries had been manipulated.

When my parents died, the rights passed to me.

But I was a child.

A court-appointed fiduciary managed everything until I turned twenty-five.

My birthday was seven months away.

Stella had no idea.

Neither did Daniel.

I only discovered it at nineteen when sorting my parents’ storage files.

Why had I become a maid in the Harrington mansion?

Not because I was infiltrating them from the beginning.

That would have made the story cleaner.

Reality wasn’t.

I genuinely needed money.

Then I saw the Harrington job listing.

Same family.

Same foundation.

Same names appearing in my father’s files.

I applied.

At first, I only wanted proximity.

Evidence came later.

Stella listened from across the private hospital conference room.

No police.

No Daniel.

Only us.

“You came into my house deliberately.”

“Yes.”

“You deceived us.”

“I cleaned twelve rooms for less than minimum wage.”

Her jaw tightened.

“That isn’t an answer.”

“I wanted to know whether Greyhaven’s theft was still happening.”

“And?”

“It is.”

Stella looked away.

“Not because of me.”

That surprised me.

“Then who?”

She hesitated.

I waited.

Finally:

“Samuel.”

“Daniel’s father?”

“He began it.”

That contradicted his video.

Stella explained.

Samuel participated in the original beneficiary replacements years earlier to protect Harrington Medical Systems from bankruptcy.

Stella discovered it after marrying him.

She demanded he stop.

He refused.

Then Marcus Carter found the fraud.

My father.

Stella secretly helped him.

That photograph of Stella and my mother?

Real friendship.

My parents had not been Stella’s enemies.

They were co-conspirators against Samuel.

Then the plan collapsed.

Someone learned what they were doing.

My parents died.

Samuel became terrified.

Stella took control of Greyhaven documents to protect Daniel and Diane.

I stared.

“You tortured me for fourteen months to protect your children?”

She looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know who you were at first.”

“And after?”

“When I discovered your surname, I panicked.”

“So you abused me.”

“I tried to make you leave.”

“With bleach? Hunger? Wage theft?”

Her eyes filled.

“There is no defense for that.”

Good.

At least she said it.

Then I asked:

“Who killed my parents?”

Stella looked toward the closed door.

“I don’t know.”

“Lie.”

“I don’t.”

“Then who were you afraid of?”

She whispered:

“Victoria Montgomery.”

Daniel’s supposed fiancée.

The woman Stella had been pushing toward her son.

I stared.

“Why would you invite her into the family?”

Stella began crying.

“Because keeping your enemy close only works if they believe they’re becoming family.”

Then she gave me one final truth.

Victoria’s father had been chairman of the subsidiary responsible for the failed medical device.

And Victoria herself had inherited control of the shell companies siphoning Greyhaven.

The Harringtons were not the only family hiding behind the trust.

They were only the visible one.
