Chapter 10 - The Woman in White

Victoria Montgomery arrived at the hospital the next morning wearing white.

Perfect hair.

Perfect smile.

Flowers worth more than Ivy’s monthly salary.

Daniel looked irritated.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“I heard about Ivy.”

Her eyes moved toward the bed.

“Poor thing.”

I smiled.

“Thank you.”

Victoria’s gaze lingered on me.

Recognition?

Maybe.

Then Stella entered.

Her face changed instantly.

Fear.

Victoria kissed her cheek.

“Stella.”

“Victoria.”

Daniel noticed.

I did too.

Later, Victoria requested a private word with Daniel.

I activated the recorder hidden inside my hospital bag.

Not because I distrusted Daniel.

Because I distrusted everyone.

Victoria told him Stella was unstable.

That Diane needed protection.

That Harrington Medical Systems should move quickly with the Montgomery merger before “family scandal damages valuation.”

There it was.

Not concern.

Timing.

She wanted the merger signed before Greyhaven surfaced.

Daniel refused.

“My family is under investigation.”

“That’s exactly why you need stability.”

“No.”

Victoria lowered her voice.

“Daniel, your father already made the arrangements.”

Daniel froze.

“My father?”

“Before he died.”

“How would you know?”

Victoria realized she had said too much.

She smiled.

“Our families discussed it.”

When she left, Daniel came to me.

“You recorded that, didn’t you?”

“Yes.”

He almost laughed.

Then became serious.

“Ivy… what are you not telling me?”

“A lot.”

“Do you trust me?”

“That isn’t a yes-or-no question anymore.”

He accepted that.

Good.

I told him about the Greyhaven succession rights.

His face went pale.

“You control the trust?”

“Not yet.”

“But you will.”

“In seven months.”

“Does my mother know?”

“Yes.”

“Does Victoria?”

“I don’t know.”

We found out that evening.

Someone attempted to kill the trust transfer.

A filing appeared in Delaware court claiming Ivy Carter had died.

Not been injured.

Died.

The document included a death certificate.

My name.

My date of birth.

Cause:

Traumatic head injury.

Time of death:

2:14 a.m.

I was looking at my own death certificate while alive.

Daniel stared.

“Who filed this?”

The registered agent belonged to Montgomery Holdings.

Then Detective Pike called.

“We found another camera.”

“Where?”

“Hospital parking garage.”

The footage showed Victoria meeting someone after leaving my room.

The man turned.

Daniel’s face went white.

May you like

“Dad?”

Samuel Harrington was alive.
