Chapter 4 - The File Marked Harrington

Ivy had been collecting evidence before Daniel came home.

Now she understood she needed to move faster.

The Harrington folder contained more than abuse.

Unpaid wages.

Illegal payroll deductions.

Threatening messages.

Household staff schedules altered after injuries.

A former cook who vanished from payroll without receiving final compensation.

A gardener whose workers’ compensation claim disappeared after Stella threatened immigration trouble.

But one category bothered Ivy most.

Medical invoices.

Harrington Medical Systems had been reimbursing the mansion for “executive home-health expenses.”

The numbers were enormous.

Yet nobody in the house received qualifying treatment.

Ivy found duplicate codes.

False service dates.

Payments routed through domestic employees.

Including herself.

According to company records, Ivy Carter had received $86,000 for specialized private-care consulting.

In reality, she had earned less than $19,000 after illegal deductions.

Someone was using the staff as financial cover.

That moved the case beyond employment abuse.

Possibly fraud.

Ivy’s legal clinic advisor, Marisol Vega, told her:

“Do not confront them.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“Good.”

“I was planning to let them underestimate me.”

Marisol sighed.

“That sentence worries me more.”

Ivy uploaded every new document.

Then Daniel knocked.

She closed the laptop.

“I’m leaving tonight.”

His face changed.

“My mother fired you?”

“Yes.”

“I can reverse it.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because staying under her permission is the problem.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

Then surprised her.

“Where will you go?”

“The clinic found temporary housing.”

“Good.”

No offer to move in.

No heroic nonsense.

Just good.

She respected that.

Then Stella stormed in.

“You are still here?”

Ivy stood.

“I’m packing.”

Diane entered behind her carrying a bottle of champagne.

“Celebrating?”

Stella ignored her.

“Daniel, downstairs.”

“No.”

“Excuse me?”

“I said no.”

Stella’s face hardened.

“You don’t understand what this girl is doing.”

Ivy almost smiled.

Stella did.

Not fully.

But enough.

“What am I doing?”

Stella looked directly at her.

“Trying to destroy this family.”

Ivy’s pulse quickened.

“How?”

Stella stepped closer.

“Your father tried the same thing.”

The room stopped.

Ivy stared.

“What did you say?”

Daniel looked confused.

Stella immediately regretted it.

Ivy moved closer.

“You knew my father?”

“No.”

“You just said—”

“I misspoke.”

“My father was an accountant.”

Stella’s eyes shifted.

Only for half a second.

Enough.

Ivy’s father, Marcus Carter, had worked as a forensic auditor before becoming an independent consultant.

He died with Ivy’s mother in what police ruled a highway accident.

Ivy had always believed it was random.

Now Stella had connected him to the Harringtons.

Daniel whispered:

“Mom… what did Ivy’s father investigate?”

Stella turned toward him.

“That is none of your business.”

Ivy quietly pressed record.

Then Diane said from behind them:

“He found the foundation accounts.”

Stella spun.

“Shut up.”

May you like

Too late.

Ivy had just found the first crack in the story of her parents’ deaths.
