Chapter 6 - The Night Before the Fall

Greyhaven was not a company.

It was a trust.

Created to compensate families harmed by an experimental medical device manufactured by a Harrington subsidiary twenty years earlier.

The device had failed.

Patients suffered.

Several died.

Harrington Medical Systems quietly settled claims.

But Greyhaven was supposed to ensure long-term compensation.

According to Samuel’s papers, someone diverted money from the trust.

Marcus Carter discovered it.

He began auditing.

Then he found something worse.

The beneficiaries had been replaced.

Real injured families were removed.

Fake entities inserted.

Millions disappeared.

Ivy’s name appeared because her mother, Naomi Carter, had once been a nurse involved in the original clinical program.

Naomi knew patients who had been harmed.

Marcus and Naomi apparently worked together.

Then they died.

Daniel asked:

“Why didn’t your parents ever tell you?”

“Because I was twelve.”

That answer hurt.

Parents protect children by hiding things.

Sometimes correctly.

Sometimes fatally.

Daniel examined another file.

“My dad wanted to expose it.”

“Maybe.”

“Then why didn’t he?”

A handwritten note gave part of the answer:

D.H. threatened.

Diane Harrington?

No.

Daniel Harrington?

Impossible—he had been twenty.

Then Ivy realized.

“D.H. isn’t a person.”

Marisol found the corporate code.

D.H. meant Domestic Holdings.

A shell entity.

Someone inside Harrington had threatened Samuel using proof that he had participated in the original cover-up.

Samuel was compromised.

He wanted to expose the theft but feared becoming its first casualty.

Stella may have inherited the mess.

Or controlled it.

They still didn’t know.

Then Daniel discovered something hidden inside his father’s desk.

A memory card.

One video.

Samuel Harrington sat in his study.

“If Daniel is watching this, I failed.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

Samuel continued:

“Stella believes Greyhaven protects the family. She does not understand that Greyhaven is the reason the family is in danger.”

Ivy looked at Daniel.

Then Samuel said:

“Marcus Carter was right.”

Ivy stopped breathing.

“He found the missing beneficiary ledger.”

Samuel looked toward the camera.

“And he hid it somewhere Stella would never search.”

The video ended.

That night, Ivy returned briefly to the mansion with police-supervised access to collect remaining belongings.

Stella watched from the staircase.

Diane stood beside her.

Daniel followed Ivy.

Stella said:

“You think my son will protect you?”

Ivy kept packing.

“No.”

“That’s why you’ll lose.”

Ivy finally looked at her.

“I don’t need Daniel to protect me.”

Stella’s jaw tightened.

Then Ivy noticed something behind Stella.

A framed photograph.

Her own mother.

Naomi Carter.

Standing beside a much younger Stella.

Smiling.

Arm around her.

Not enemies.

Friends.

Ivy whispered:

“You knew my mother.”

Stella’s face collapsed.

Then she shoved the photograph from the table.

Glass shattered.

And Diane whispered:

May you like

“Mom… she knows.”

That was when Stella attacked.
