Chapter 11 - The Father Who Came Back
Daniel refused to believe it.
The camera timestamp was current.
The face was Samuel’s.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Six years earlier, Daniel had watched his father’s coffin lowered into the ground.
Closed casket.
Stroke complications.
Now Samuel walked through a parking garage beside Victoria Montgomery.
Ivy remembered Stella’s words.
Samuel began it.
Maybe he never stopped.
Police traced the vehicle.
Rental.
False identification.
Then Samuel called Daniel.
“Son.”
Daniel’s entire body stiffened.
“Where are you?”
“Safe.”
“You let us bury you.”
“I had no choice.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“You always had a choice.”
Samuel claimed he staged his death after discovering the Greyhaven fraud had expanded into international medical procurement.
Montgomery companies were using the trust’s shell entities to hide bribery and kickbacks.
He went underground to investigate.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe you became a hero?”
Samuel went silent.
“I was trying to repair what I did.”
At least he admitted it.
Then Ivy asked from the bed:
“Did you kill my parents?”
Silence.
Samuel said:
“No.”
“Did you know who did?”
Another silence.
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Ivy’s voice went cold.
“Who?”
Samuel answered:
“Your mother.”
Everything stopped.
I couldn’t process it.
“My mother died with him.”
“No.”
Samuel claimed Naomi Carter survived the crash.
The body identified as Ivy’s mother belonged to another woman.
Dental records had been manipulated.
Ivy laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because the alternative was screaming.
“That’s insane.”
Samuel said:
“Your mother is alive.”
“Where?”
“With Victoria.”
My lungs stopped working for a second.
Then Samuel added:
“She’s the one who built the modern Greyhaven network.”
The woman Ivy had spent twelve years mourning was apparently alive.
And if Samuel told the truth, Naomi Carter had become part of the machine her husband tried to expose.
Daniel whispered:
“Why would she?”
Samuel answered:
“Because Marcus Carter wasn’t innocent either.”
The story of Ivy’s parents shattered.
Marcus had apparently discovered Greyhaven fraud—and decided he could control it.
Naomi tried to stop him.
The crash occurred while they fled each other.
One died.
One disappeared.
Samuel helped fake Naomi’s death.
Then Victoria’s family recruited her financial expertise.
Ivy stared at the wall.
Everything she had built herself around—grief, justice, parental memory—suddenly felt unstable.
Then Stella appeared at the doorway.
She had heard enough.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
She looked directly at Samuel’s voice on speaker.
“You’re lying again.”
Samuel went silent.
Stella continued:
“Naomi didn’t join Victoria.”
