Chapter 9 - Grace Comes Home

Emma called the estate.

No answer.

Police radioed officers.

Static.

Then one officer responded.

Everything normal.

No unknown woman.

Emma sent the photo.

Officer searched.

Nothing.

Was image old?

Metadata live.

Maybe manipulated.

They rushed back.

Noah was safe.

Three officers present.

No security breach.

Yet Noah said:

“A lady talked to me.”

Emma’s heart stopped.

“When?”

“Ten minutes ago.”

“Where?”

“Through Dad’s secret wall.”

Again.

The passage.

Officer had not known.

Noah described her.

Blonde.

Blue eyes.

About Emma’s age.

She did not enter room.

Spoke from darkness.

What did she say?

“Tell your mom I remember the pond.”

Eleanor sat down.

Grace.

Maybe.

Noah continued:

“She said Grandma remembers the bracelet.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

“What else?”

“She said Julian remembers the song.”

Julian went still.

Grace and Julian had a song?

He nodded.

An old camp song he sang when Grace was scared.

Never recorded publicly.

Could Rachel know from files?

Maybe.

Claire could.

Daniel Vale could.

Again, no single private memory enough.

Then Noah handed Emma something.

A page torn from David’s notebook.

EMMA — IF YOU EVER MEET SOMEONE CLAIMING TO BE GRACE, ASK HER WHAT SHE STOLE FROM ME THE NIGHT JULIAN BROKE THE LOCK.

Emma looked at Julian.

“What did Grace steal from David?”

He frowned.

“I don’t know.”

Eleanor did not.

Maybe authentic test.

Grace would.

Where find her?

She left a location:

Garden cage.

Midnight.

Alone.

Emma laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

They prepared police surveillance.

Emma refused to go truly alone.

But at midnight she entered garden.

Cage 01 stood open.

Bars black against moonlight.

Emma stayed outside.

A woman approached from roses.

Blonde.

Thirty-six.

Grace age.

No obvious weapon.

She stopped ten feet away.

“You look worse than David described.”

Emma’s heart tightened.

“You knew him.”

“Yes.”

“Prove who you are.”

Woman nodded.

“Ask.”

“What did you steal from David the night Julian broke the lock?”

The woman’s expression changed.

Sadness.

“His left shoe.”

Emma frowned.

Why?

Grace explained.

David had kicked it off inside Cage 02 while panicking.

After Julian opened him, Grace picked it up and hid it in rose bushes because David told her earlier that if father took his shoes, he couldn’t force him back into cage.

Child logic.

Later David accused Julian of losing it.

Only Grace and David knew.

Could be in Charles’s therapy notes?

Maybe.

Emma did not declare identity yet.

“DNA.”

Grace smiled faintly.

“Good.”

She had sample ready.

Police collected.

Preliminary rapid kinship later confirmed:

Eleanor biological mother.

Grace.

Finally.

Not bracelet.

Not memory.

DNA.

Eleanor cried when told.

Grace did not embrace her.

“No.”

Eleanor stopped.

“I understand.”

“Do you?”

“No.”

Honest.

Grace looked at Emma.

“David chose you because you don’t belong to them.”

Emma said:

“I married him.”

“That doesn’t make you Mercer in the way he meant.”

“What did he change his mind about?”

Grace’s face tightened.

“Releasing Orpheus.”

David originally planned automatic public release after his death.

Then disabled it three days before helicopter crash.

Why?

Because archive included identities of surviving child subjects.

Victims.

Medical records.

People who never consented to exposure.

Public dump would retraumatize them.

So David changed structure.

Emma controls release case by case.

Eleanor interpreted this as opportunity to seize funds.

Julian wanted exposure.

Grace wanted restitution.

Different motives.

“What do you want?” Emma asked.

Grace looked at cage.

“I wanted Charles’s money burned.”

“Symbolically?”

“No.”

She smiled without humor.

“Transferred to victims until nothing remains.”

“What about Noah’s inheritance?”

“David separated Noah’s personal inheritance.”

Orpheus not Noah’s core fund.

Eleanor had lied saying family fortune.

It was mostly Charles’s research-derived assets and shell reserves.

Emma turned toward Eleanor.

“You knew?”

Eleanor said:

“Some.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

Again guilt.

But Grace’s return raised question.

Why hide twenty-eight years?

Charles sent Grace to Vesper.

What was Vesper?

Private therapeutic community in Canada.

Different identity.

Charles told staff Grace had attacked family.

He conditioned her to believe Julian caused sister Rose’s death?

There was no sister Rose in same household.

He mixed memories deliberately.

Grace spent adolescence uncertain who she was.

At eighteen she escaped.

Margaret found her years later.

Told truth partly.

Daniel Vale helped.

Why not contact Eleanor?

Grace hated her.

Because Charles showed video of Eleanor choosing another girl in 1998.

Edited.

Made it look as though Eleanor rejected Grace directly.

In reality Grace was not one of two presented.

Charles weaponized footage.

Grace believed mother chose Rose over her.

Decades of hatred built on edited evidence.

Eleanor whispered:

“I never saw you.”

“I know now.”

Grace’s face cracked.

“But knowing now doesn’t give me childhood back.”

“No.”

Again no easy reunion.

Emma asked about David’s crash.

Grace looked away.

“I was supposed to meet him.”

“At North House?”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Daniel stopped me.”

“Daniel Vale?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He said David was being followed.”

By whom?

Grace did not know.

David changed helicopter route to evade surveillance.

Mechanical failure occurred.

Was sabotage?

Investigation later found a fuel-line defect from maintenance.

Could have been accidental.

Could be tampering.

Need evidence.

Grace did not claim murder.

Good.

She had something else.

David’s last voice message.

He said:

“If I don’t make it back, do not let my mother touch Cage 01.”

Why?

Grace stared at Eleanor.

“Because the key under Cage 01 opens more than the basement.”

Emma knew.

It opened access.

“What else?”

Grace walked inside the cage.

Moved loose stone.

Another lock.

Different from basement hatch.

Noah’s black key fit.

She turned it.

A compartment opened inside one iron bar.

Tiny memory drive.

David hid it there.

Eleanor had locked Emma literally inches from the thing she wanted most without knowing.

Grace removed drive.

“David called this the conscience copy.”

It contained final edits to Orpheus.

And one video.

Recorded the morning of his crash.

David appeared.

Alive.

Tired.

“Emma.”

She began crying instantly.

“If you’re watching this, Noah found Uncle Daniel or Julian did what he promised.”

So mysterious man was Uncle Daniel Vale.

Confirmed.

David knew he might return.

“Do not give Mother the money.”

Eleanor flinched.

“Not because she is the worst person in this story.”

Pause.

“Because she still believes money can buy back what happened.”

David continued.

“Grace wants all of it released. Julian wants all files public. Daniel wants family names protected. Claire wants Charles’s research destroyed.”

Different agendas.

“I don’t trust any of them completely.”

Emma almost smiled through tears.

That was David.

Then:

“I trust you to be angry at me.”

Emma sobbed once.

“I kept too much from you.”

Yes.

“You deserved a husband, not another Mercer protecting you through omission.”

The exact family disease.

Then David said:

“One more thing.”

His face changed.

“The helicopter problem isn’t why I’m afraid.”

Emma leaned closer.

“I found out who has been moving money out of Orpheus.”

Someone was stealing.

Not Eleanor?

David continued:

“It isn’t Mother.”

Eleanor looked up.

“It isn’t Julian.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“It isn’t Grace.”

Grace stared.

“It’s Noah.”

Silence.

Emma stopped breathing.

Her nine-year-old son.

Impossible.

David continued:

“Or someone using an account I created in his name.”

There.

Not child villain.

Identity misuse.

Someone had been moving money under Noah’s credentials.

Why?

And how long?

David looked into camera.

“If I die before I trace it, follow the smallest transfers.”

The video ended.

Emma opened account logs.

Dozens of one-dollar transactions.

Each memo:

CAGE 01

CAGE 02

CAGE 03

CAGE 04

There were more cages.

Not physical necessarily.

Each transfer mapped to a former research subject.

A payment.

A signal.

Someone was using Noah’s account to contact victims.

Maybe protect them.

Maybe manipulate.

The last transaction occurred that morning.

Memo:

CAGE 05 — EMMA.

Emma stared.

She had been designated a cage subject.

Not by Eleanor.

By whoever controlled Noah’s account.

Someone predicted Eleanor would imprison her.

Or instructed it.

The day’s cruelty had been anticipated.

Possibly engineered.

And Eleanor—

May you like

for all her guilt—

might have been used as part of someone else’s sequence.
