Chapter 8 - North House

North House stood on a wooded ridge above Lake George.
Gray stone.
Shuttered windows.
No visible road from main highway.
A property built for disappearing people.
Police reached it first.
No one inside.
But fresh tire tracks.
The green Jaguar parked behind.
Engine warm.
Rachel/Rose gone.
Mysterious driver gone.
Back door open.
Emma entered with officers.
Eleanor behind.
Julian.
Claire.
Noah remained at estate under police supervision despite furious protests.
Good.
At least one child outside the secret.
North House smelled like cedar, dust and old medicine.
Bedrooms upstairs.
Treatment rooms below.
Charles Mercer’s foundation insignia on storage boxes.
This had been a private clinic.
For whom?
Files answered.
Children from elite families whose parents wanted “discreet behavioral stabilization.”
Some genuine psychiatric care.
Some coercive confinement.
Charles operated through physicians.
Not solely his own experiments.
Grace’s transfer record led here.
So did Claire’s.
Two girls.
G-01.
G-02.
Rachel North’s childhood file appeared under another code:
R-01.
Three girls?
Emma felt sick.
They had assumed two.
Grace.
Claire.
Rose.
Maybe all three existed simultaneously.
The story was not one swapped child.
It was identity mixing among three girls.
Why?
Charles’s experiment called:
KINSHIP RECOGNITION UNDER CONFLICTING CUES.
He intentionally blurred identities.
Similar clothing.
Shared stories.
Transferred objects.
He wanted to measure whether parents recognized children through memory, appearance, labels or emotional response.
Eleanor sat down hard.
“He used us.”
Yes.
The 1998 post-incident “choice” had been deliberate research.
Two girls presented.
One bracelet.
Charles observed Eleanor’s decision.
Eleanor chose the bracelet.
The child she chose?
File:
SUBJECT R-01.
Rose.
Biological niece.
Charles told Eleanor she was Grace.
So Eleanor brought Rose home temporarily?
What happened after?
Records showed R-01 discharged after eleven days to M. Vale.
Margaret.
Meaning Eleanor’s chosen “Grace” left anyway.
What did Eleanor believe?
She remembered Charles saying Grace required treatment.
Then later reported Grace dead.
Timeline fragmented by trauma.
Claire/G-02 remained.
What about G-01?
Biological Grace.
Transferred separately.
Destination redacted.
Emma’s pulse raced.
So Grace survived and was not Rose.
Claire was a substitute patient.
Rose briefly used as another recognition subject.
Three girls.
Charles made Eleanor choose between Rose and Claire after Grace had already been removed.
The choice was rigged.
No correct daughter present.
Eleanor whispered:
“He wanted me to fail.”
Julian’s anger deepened.
“He wanted data.”
Same thing emotionally.
Why tell family Grace died?
Because Charles decided permanent removal was “clinically necessary” after incident?
Maybe.
Or because Grace knew something.
The ledger.
They found Grace’s notes.
Child handwriting.
Numbers copied from father’s files.
She had been secretly recording project codes because Julian taught her numbers.
Julian cried when he saw.
“I taught her to copy license plates.”
A sibling game.
That skill became evidence.
Grace had written shell accounts.
Doctors.
Dates.
Charles realized.
He removed her.
Where?
A final transfer:
G-01 → SITE VESPER.
No address.
Claire had never seen it.
Rachel/Rose likely knew.
Then a sound upstairs.
Movement.
Police shouted.
A door slammed.
Officers pursued.
They found Rachel standing alone in attic.
Hands raised.
No mysterious man.
Eleanor saw her.
The resemblance to childhood Grace devastated her.
Rachel looked at Eleanor with hatred.
“You came.”
Eleanor whispered:
“Rose?”
Rachel smiled bitterly.
“Finally.”
DNA was already likely niece.
Rachel confirmed.
She was Rose Vale.
Margaret’s daughter.
She grew up knowing Eleanor as “the woman who stole my name.”
What?
Margaret told Rose that Eleanor took her identity and gave it to Grace?
Confusing.
Rachel clarified.
After 1998, Charles used Rose as Grace temporarily in records.
That contaminated Rose’s legal identity.
Her school and medical files carried Grace Mercer aliases.
When Margaret reclaimed her, she had to disappear because Charles threatened to prosecute her for kidnapping “Grace.”
Thus Rose lost her own name for years.
She blamed Eleanor, believing Eleanor cooperated.
Eleanor said she did not know.
Rachel believed maybe now.
“Where is the man who brought you?” Emma asked.
Rachel looked at her.
“Which man?”
“The Jaguar.”
“He left.”
“Name.”
Rachel hesitated.
“Daniel.”
Emma froze.
David?
No.
Daniel Mercer was Charles’s younger brother? Wait existing family? We haven't established. Could be another old relative. Better: Daniel Cross, not Mercer? Need central man likely David alive? Let's keep mystery.
“Daniel who?”
Rachel looked at Eleanor.
“Daniel Vale.”
Eleanor went pale.
“My brother.”
Another sibling.
Too many? Could be. But maybe Eleanor's family had Margaret and Daniel. Fine.
Eleanor’s younger brother Daniel Vale disappeared after Grace’s death.
Officially overdose twenty years ago?
Eleanor thought dead.
Rachel said alive.
He helped Margaret hide Rose.
Later helped David investigate.
Scar resemblance?
Daniel Vale would not look like David likely unless family? Eleanor is David's mother; her brother could resemble David maternally. Yes.
Private nickname Captain North? Could know via David collaboration.
Scar? Family? He could have copied? Hmm.
Noah's man looked like Dad, could be maternal uncle Daniel Vale. Similar enough.
Daniel Vale had worked at estate when David was child.
He knew passages.
Codes.
Maybe David trusted him later.
Why secret?
Because Charles blamed him for helping Julian.
Eleanor believed Daniel died after addiction.
Another fake/incorrect story.
Rachel said Daniel was alive, but ill.
He gave Noah key.
So no David resurrection.
Good.
Emma felt both relief and grief.
Hope died accurately.
“Where is he?”
Rachel pointed toward lake.
“He went to Vesper.”
“You know location?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you go?”
“Because he told me Grace might kill me.”
Everyone froze.
Why would Grace kill Rose?
Rachel smiled sadly.
“Because Grace thinks I helped steal her life.”
But Rachel was a child.
Another inherited blame.
The central mystery expanded.
Vesper.
Grace alive.
Daniel Vale.
David’s investigation.
And the money.
Rachel explained Orpheus.
Grace herself had contacted David six years earlier through encrypted channels.
She demanded money from Charles’s estate as restitution for victims.
David began creating Orpheus.
So the reserve was partly Grace’s demand.
Eleanor assumed blackmail.
Maybe not.
Then Rachel handed Emma a phone.
One unread message from Daniel Vale:
EMMA MUST DECIDE WHAT HAPPENS TO ORPHEUS.
NOT ELEANOR.
NOT JULIAN.
NOT GRACE.
Emma stared.
Why her?
Because David chose her as trustee.
Yes.
But Daniel added:
DAVID DIDN’T DIE BEFORE HE FINISHED THE PLAN.
HE DIED AFTER HE CHANGED HIS MIND.
Emma’s pulse spiked.
Changed his mind about what?
Rachel did not know.
Then another message arrived.
From unknown number.
A photo.
Noah.
At the estate.
Safe with officer.
But behind him, through window—
a woman.
Blonde.
Watching.
