Chapter 10 - Who Put Emma in Cage 05

Eleanor admitted the demand came from an anonymous packet.
That changed everything.
She had still chosen to act.
Still ordered Emma into the cage.
Still humiliated her.
Still threw dog food.
No one erased that.
But why today?
Because three days earlier, Eleanor received documents claiming Emma planned to move Orpheus offshore and cut the Mercer family out permanently.
The packet included:
Bank drafts.
Emails.
Emma’s signature.
A photo of Emma meeting a Swiss trustee.
All looked real.
Emma stared.
“I never did this.”
The signature was hers.
Context?
She had signed a trust amendment months earlier.
Copied.
The Swiss trustee meeting?
She had met a college friend at a hotel.
Man in background was trustee.
Camera angle implied meeting.
Real image.
False narrative.
Again.
Who sent packet?
Anonymous.
Included one instruction:
Force Emma to execute emergency transfer before 5 p.m. or Orpheus disappears.
Eleanor panicked.
Instead of lawyers, she used the cage.
Why?
Because packet referenced Grace.
Threatened that if Eleanor failed, “Cage 02 will be reopened publicly.”
Shame.
Fear.
She reverted to control.
Whoever designed packet knew exactly how to make Eleanor behave badly.
Emma understood.
CAGE 05 was not merely her.
It was an experiment reenacting Charles’s methods through adult trauma.
Manipulate Eleanor.
Confine Emma.
Bring Noah.
Trigger Julian/Grace.
Observe.
Who would want that?
Claire?
She had research knowledge.
Denied.
Grace?
Wanted evidence.
Denied.
Daniel Vale?
Gave Noah key, apparently countering experiment.
Julian?
No.
Rachel/Rose?
No motive.
Miriam? Not in story.
The Orpheus account traced one-dollar transfers to a digital administrator:
NORTHSTAR CHILD RESILIENCE FOUNDATION.
Successor to Charles Mercer’s original foundation.
Eleanor stared.
“I shut that down.”
“You dissolved the old entity,” Julian said. “Not the successor.”
Who created Northstar?
David.
Everyone froze.
David revived part of his father’s foundation?
Why?
Grace said he used it to locate former subjects and pay reparations privately.
Good motive.
But same infrastructure.
After David died, administrator control passed to board.
Who sat on board?
Eleanor.
Julian?
No.
Claire under alias.
A psychiatrist named Dr. Thomas Bell.
Noah’s child therapist.
Emma went cold.
Noah had seen Dr. Bell for grief after David died.
She chose him from referral list.
Who referred?
Eleanor.
Eleanor looked horrified.
“I didn’t know.”
Bell’s father?
Arthur Bell—the doctor who handled births.
Same family.
Thomas Bell was Arthur’s son.
He inherited research papers.
Potential central antagonist.
But avoid simple.
They confronted Bell.
He did not flee.
At clinic.
Calm.
Admitted using Noah’s account.
Why?
David instructed him.
Before death, David created an automated micro-payment system in Noah’s name to contact former subjects discreetly.
Bell administered it.
Then why Cage 05?
Bell stared.
“I didn’t create that.”
Logs showed someone used his credentials.
Real credentials.
False operator.
Again.
Who had access?
Assistant.
Board tech administrator.
And Noah’s tablet, because David had installed a trust app.
Noah could technically authorize without knowing.
Emma remembered Noah playing a game that morning.
Could someone prompt him?
She asked.
Noah said an app showed “help Mom” button.
He pressed.
That triggered CAGE 05 transfer.
But app was not installed by Bell.
Who sent push notification?
User:
CAPTAIN NORTH.
David’s private nickname.
Account created before his death.
Scheduled messages?
Could be David.
Or someone using dead man’s account.
They opened Captain North account archive.
Messages to Noah over past year.
Not many.
Birthday clue.
Encouragement.
“Your dad would be proud.”
Some could be automated by David.
Metadata creation dates before crash.
But recent Cage key instruction was sent yesterday.
From login at North House.
Who was there?
Daniel Vale.
He admitted.
Daniel used David’s Captain North credentials.
Why?
David gave them to him.
So Daniel guided Noah.
Did Daniel trigger Cage 05?
He said no.
He saw transaction and realized Emma was in danger.
He returned to estate.
Thus Daniel was protector here.
Who triggered notification?
A separate process inside Orpheus.
Automated based on Eleanor’s transfer attempt.
When Eleanor initiated emergency request, system flagged Emma as under coercion.
CAGE 05 label automatically assigned.
A system David built recognized coercive transfer risk.
Not sinister actor.
Partial answer.
So one-dollar transaction was alarm, not experiment.
Good recontextualization.
It signaled former network members to intervene.
Daniel received alert.
Gave Noah key.
Julian came.
Grace came.
System worked, chaotically.
Emma felt both admiration and anger.
David built a protection system without telling her.
Again.
She was saved by secrecy she resented.
Complicated.
But who sent Eleanor fake packet?
Still unknown.
That person initiated everything.
Trace physical envelope.
Paper.
Printer.
Courier.
Courier footage revealed a woman.
Rachel/Rose?
No.
Claire?
No.
Older.
Silver-blonde wig.
Face partially visible.
Eleanor stared.
“Margaret.”
Her sister.
Rose’s mother.
Alive.
Margaret had told David “Eleanor chose wrong child.”
She knew family trauma.
She could manipulate.
Why target Emma?
They found Margaret at motel.
She did not deny sending packet.
Emma’s anger exploded.
“You made Eleanor think I was stealing.”
Margaret replied:
“I needed her to trigger Orpheus.”
“Why?”
“Because Grace wouldn’t answer me.”
Margaret wanted system alarm to draw all surviving subjects together.
A reunion by crisis.
Monstrous in its own way.
She believed only emergency would force Grace, Claire, Julian, Daniel and Eleanor into same place.
“Why involve me?”
“Because David made you the switch.”
Emma stared.
“You put me in danger.”
“I expected Eleanor to threaten you.”
“She locked me in a cage.”
Margaret looked at Eleanor with disgust.
“That was her choice.”
True but insufficient.
“You knew she might.”
“Yes.”
There.
Culpability.
Margaret did not control Eleanor’s cruelty but exploited it.
Why gather everyone?
Because she had found Grace’s biological sister.
Everyone froze.
Grace had a sister?
Not twin.
Half-sister.
Charles Mercer fathered another daughter.
With Margaret.
Eleanor stared.
“You and Charles?”
Margaret looked away.
Years before Eleanor married Charles.
Margaret had relationship with him first.
Child?
Noah’s family tree became nightmare.
Daughter named Elise.
Raised elsewhere.
Charles used her in research too.
CAGE 03.
Margaret wanted victims reunited before Elise exposed Orpheus publicly.
Why?
Because Elise believed all Mercers—including Emma and Noah—should lose everything.
She was moving against the trust.
Fake packet was Margaret’s desperate attempt to activate defenses.
Again, no mastermind.
A mother trying to stop another daughter.
But where was Elise?
Margaret whispered:
“Inside the estate.”
Emma’s blood ran cold.
“What?”
“She’s been on staff for eleven months.”
Under another name.
Who?
Emma reviewed staff mentally.
Housekeeper.
Cook.
Gardener.
Tutor.
Estate nurse.
Then realization.
Sophie Hart.
Noah’s grief counselor assistant.
Frequently in house.
Blonde.
Thirty-five.
Quiet.
Trusted.
She had access to Noah’s tablet.
Eleanor’s printer.
David’s room?
Maybe.
But mysterious man was Daniel.
Elise could send packets.
She could hijack systems.
Margaret whispered:
“She calls herself Sophie because Grace used to love that name.”
Emma remembered Sophie leaving that morning before confrontation.
Or appearing to.
Police searched staff quarters.
Empty.
One note:
YOU ALL KEEP ASKING WHO DESERVED THE CAGE.
YOU SHOULD ASK WHO BUILT THE HOUSE AROUND IT.
Below:
MIDNIGHT. ORPHEUS VOTES.
Elise planned to force decision on Orpheus.
Victims versus family.
Money versus exposure.
May you like
And unlike Eleanor—
she had no interest in keeping Mercer reputation intact.
