Chapter 11 - Elise Mercer

Elise did not want to kill anyone.

That was the first important truth.

The second:

She wanted them to lose control.

All of them.

She hijacked Orpheus governance vote through David’s emergency protocol.

At midnight, beneficiaries and custodians had to decide:

Release evidence selectively.

Release all publicly.

Transfer all assets to victim fund.

Or freeze system permanently.

Emma held decisive proxy because David made her trustee.

Elise manipulated Eleanor to trigger the vote early.

Why?

She believed Emma would otherwise delay for years.

“You could have asked me,” Emma said when Elise finally appeared by secure video.

Elise laughed.

“People like you only answer after something hurts.”

Emma’s bruised cheek burned.

“You made sure something hurt.”

“I sent documents.”

“You knew Eleanor.”

“Yes.”

“So you knew.”

Elise did not deny.

That made Emma despise her.

But Elise’s grievances were real.

She grew up in institutions funded by Charles.

Not knowing he was her father.

Margaret visited secretly.

Rarely.

Told her she was “protected.”

Elise learned the word meant abandoned.

At twenty, she discovered Charles’s paternity.

Tried to contact him.

He paid lawyer to silence her.

At twenty-four she discovered CAGE 03 files.

Her own childhood anxiety treatments had been part of data collection.

She became determined to destroy Mercer control.

Yet she worked on estate eleven months under fake identity.

Why not expose immediately?

Because she wanted Orpheus access.

David’s trust was locked.

Emma’s authorization needed.

Elise studied her.

Unexpected finding:

Emma was not greedy.

Did not drain money.

Paid victims’ legal bills quietly without knowing full context.

Elise’s certainty weakened.

Then Eleanor began pressuring Emma.

Elise decided crisis would reveal true loyalties.

Again, an experiment.

Emma said:

“You became Charles.”

Elise’s face changed.

“No.”

“You manipulated people into stress so you could observe what they chose.”

“No.”

“You put a mother in a cage indirectly to test whether she’d protect money.”

Elise went silent.

That was the wound.

She had repeated the method she hated.

Intent different.

Architecture same.

Elise ended call.

But the midnight vote remained.

Emma gathered everyone.

Noah excluded.

Firmly.

He stayed with police offsite.

Finally adults alone.

Eleanor wanted selective release.

Julian wanted public.

Grace wanted victim restitution and private medical records protected.

Claire wanted research methods destroyed after legal review.

Daniel Vale wanted family names irrelevant; focus institutions.

Rose wanted identity corrections for children used as substitutes.

Margaret wanted Elise safe.

Elise wanted all money transferred and archive public.

Emma listened.

No one entirely wrong.

No one entirely right.

David had chosen her for this.

Not because she knew most.

Because she stood outside original trauma.

But now she was inside.

Decision could not be solitary.

She refused the system’s binary choices.

Asked lawyers to pause.

Impossible.

Orpheus programmed.

Midnight deadline.

Why such rigid structure?

David feared coercion.

If no choice, default selective release to independent trustees.

Maybe default was best.

Then Emma found hidden option.

CAGE ZERO.

What?

A governance mode.

Requires unanimous consent from surviving direct subjects.

Who counts?

Julian.

Grace.

Claire?

Yes, substitute subject.

Rose.

Elise.

Possibly others.

Cage Zero meant no single custodian decides. Victims take control.

David built it.

He wanted subjects themselves to govern evidence and restitution.

Why not activate before death?

Could not locate all.

Emma now had them.

Except one.

CAGE 04.

Unknown subject.

Who?

Files encrypted.

Bell traced code.

Subject born 1987.

Male.

Mercer household.

Julian age? older.

David born ~1986. Could be David.

Yes.

CAGE 04 was David.

But he was dead.

Unanimous impossible.

Unless successor proxy.

His named proxy?

Noah.

Emma froze.

David assigned Noah.

A child.

No.

She refused.

Maybe adult guardian can vote?

Orpheus says successor after subject death: legal descendant; if minor, guardian acts.

Emma.

So she holds David/Noah proxy.

Cage Zero possible.

Emma voted as guardian.

Not for money.

For governance.

Everyone else must consent.

Eleanor not subject? Not direct. No vote.

Margaret not.

Victims.

Julian hesitated.

He hated Claire’s false Grace identity.

Claire hated family.

Grace distrusted everyone.

Rose wanted no involvement.

Elise wanted destruction.

They had to agree.

That was David’s final design.

Not technical mystery.

Moral one.

Could people manipulated into competition govern together?

At 11:52, Grace voted yes.

11:54 Claire.

11:56 Rose.

Julian waited.

Elise remained no.

Emma spoke to her privately.

“You want to burn the money because it feels clean.”

“Yes.”

“It isn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because victims may want different things.”

“Money came from abuse.”

“Then let them decide how to use it.”

Elise looked away.

“You’re asking me to trust Mercers.”

“No. I’m asking you to trust people Charles tried to turn into subjects.”

At 11:59 Elise voted yes.

Julian still.

He looked at Eleanor.

All his life he wanted truth public.

If Cage Zero, victims could keep parts private.

He might never get public vindication.

Eleanor said nothing.

Good.

Then Julian voted yes with four seconds left.

System changed.

ORPHEUS GOVERNANCE TRANSFERRED TO SUBJECT COUNCIL.

Emma exhaled.

Money no longer controlled by her alone.

Eleanor could not seize.

Elise could not burn.

Victims governed.

Central financial conflict resolved.

But before screen closed, new file unlocked.

CAGE ZERO ORIGIN.

Creator:

CHARLES MERCER.

Everyone froze.

David had not invented Cage Zero.

Charles had.

Why would abuser build victim governance?

Maybe not for ethical reason.

File opened.

CAGE ZERO was original final experiment.

Goal:

After prolonged conflict, place subjects together and observe whether they cooperate or destroy one another when given control of resources.

Emma stared.

Even their resolution might have been anticipated decades earlier.

Elise whispered:

“He planned this.”

Julian said:

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because David changed code.”

Yes.

David repurposed Cage Zero.

Original mechanism became real governance.

Like Orpheus.

Father’s tool turned against him.

But one line remained in original file:

FINAL SUBJECT NOT YET INTRODUCED.

CAGE 06.

There had been another planned subject.

Never identified.

Until metadata updated after midnight.

CAGE 06 — ACTIVE.

Name hidden.

Someone living.

Someone who had just entered system.

May you like

And unlike the others—

they had not yet been told.
