Chapter 12 - Cage 06

The identity decrypted slowly through legal keys.
Emma expected another hidden sibling.
Another child.
Another victim.
It was not.
CAGE 06:
ELEANOR VALE MERCER.
Silence.
Eleanor stared.
“I was never a subject.”
Julian laughed once.
Not mockery.
Shock.
“You were.”
Charles had studied her too.
Not inside bars.
Through family manipulation.
His wife.
His primary adult subject.
Goal:
Measure maternal loyalty under conflicting child-threat scenarios.
Emma felt sick.
Charles did not merely manipulate children.
He manipulated Eleanor’s perception of them.
Julian “dangerous.”
Grace “fragile.”
David “dependent.”
He fed different reports.
Provoked conflicts.
Observed whom Eleanor believed.
After Cage incident, he staged the false-choice test between Rose and Claire.
Recorded Eleanor.
Then used her guilt to control her.
Eleanor spent decades believing she was an accomplice by weakness.
She was.
But also a subject.
Both truths.
Elise looked shaken.
She hated Eleanor.
This complicated it.
Eleanor read her own file.
Charles’s notes:
SUBJECT E-06 prioritizes family reputation under stress.
Responds strongly to shame cue.
Likely to conceal wrongdoing if disclosure threatens child status.
Can be induced to police other subjects.
Eleanor went pale.
Her entire matriarch identity described as predictable behavior.
Emma thought of today.
Fake packet triggered shame.
Eleanor locked Emma in cage.
Pattern held decades later.
Elise exploited same vulnerability.
Charles’s experiment lived through conditioning, not code.
Eleanor whispered:
“He knew.”
Julian said:
“He made you.”
“No.”
“You became some of it yourself.”
Important.
Charles influenced.
Eleanor chose too.
Emma would not let victimhood erase cruelty.
Eleanor looked at her bruised face.
“I know.”
First genuine ownership.
Then Orpheus invited E-06 to council.
Eleanor had choice.
Accept victim status?
She refused.
“I am not taking money from people I hurt.”
Council membership not payment.
Voice.
She still refused initially.
Grace said:
“Join.”
Eleanor looked at her daughter.
First direct request.
“Why?”
“Because I’m tired of you deciding what shame requires.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
Grace continued.
“Stay. Hear what everyone says about you.”
Harder than leaving.
Eleanor accepted.
Cage Zero now included adult manipulator and manipulated mother.
Complex.
Then CAGE 06 ACTIVE indicator changed to COMPLETE.
Because she learned truth?
Maybe.
System was archival, not live AI. Trigger based on file access.
Next file:
E-06 SUCCESSOR OBSERVATION — DAVID MERCER.
Charles planned to study whether Eleanor’s patterns transferred to David.
They did.
David protected through secrecy.
Controlled information.
Built systems around loved ones.
Emma cried.
David had fought father and repeated pieces.
Then:
D-04 SUCCESSOR — NOAH MERCER.
Emma’s blood chilled.
Charles’s architecture had tagged descendants automatically.
Not active testing necessarily.
Data labels inherited.
David knew.
That was why he built Orpheus safeguards.
He feared Noah would inherit family role.
Emma understood something about the black key.
David’s plan to give it through Daniel to Noah was not just rescue.
He intentionally involved Noah in a controlled way.
He believed giving boy a key would teach agency.
But Emma saw danger.
He had still put nine-year-old inside family game.
Even from grave.
She became angry at David.
Good.
Love could include anger.
Emma found another video.
David speaking to Daniel Vale.
“If I die, do not tell Noah everything.”
Emma almost threw laptop.
Then David continued:
“Tell Emma. Let her decide what he can carry.”
Better.
But Daniel bypassed Emma today because emergency.
He gave Noah key.
Why not free Emma himself?
Because he feared Eleanor would react violently to him.
He used Noah as low-threat messenger.
Still questionable.
Emma would confront him.
Adults kept using children as couriers.
Enough.
Then police located Daniel Vale.
Alive at cabin.
He surrendered.
Emma confronted.
“You used my son.”
Daniel said:
“Yes.”
No excuse.
“Why?”
“I thought it was fastest.”
“That doesn’t make it right.”
“No.”
Good.
Daniel revealed he had entered David’s room after Orpheus alarm.
Noah found him.
He gave key.
He did not predict Noah would run directly into confrontation with Eleanor.
Mistake.
He apologized to Noah later personally.
Emma accepted apology only after Noah did.
Boundaries.
The story’s central mystery about key was now largely solved:
David created emergency path.
Daniel delivered key.
CAGE 01 key opened cage and basement.
Noah’s nickname authenticated Daniel’s connection.
Eleanor panicked because key resurrected Cage 02 history.
The person was not David.
It was his maternal uncle Daniel Vale.
But larger backbone: why money, cages, hidden children? Mostly resolved.
Yet Grace’s disappearance still had one missing period.
Vesper records.
Who funded after Charles died?
Payments continued for years.
Signer:
E. MERCER.
Eleanor?
She denied.
Signature looked hers.
Real?
Forensics likely copied.
But could be someone else with E.
Emma.
No.
Evelyn? no introduced.
Elise Mercer? later.
Grace looked at Eleanor.
“You paid them.”
Eleanor stared.
“No.”
Records showed bank account jointly controlled by Charles and Eleanor.
Autopay established 1998.
Eleanor signed blanket trust authorization.
Again real signature.
Unseen use.
She unknowingly funded Grace’s confinement for sixteen years.
Grace absorbed.
That hurt differently than intentional abandonment.
Eleanor whispered:
“I signed whatever Charles gave me.”
Grace said:
“That’s still a choice.”
“Yes.”
No defense.
Emma saw potential healing not through innocence, but accurate responsibility.
Then a Vesper file revealed Grace had not been alone.
Another child visited annually.
Code:
NORTH BOY.
David.
Emma froze.
David visited Grace?
At what age?
From fourteen to twenty.
Secret trips.
Did he know?
He believed Grace was a patient named Anna North.
He did not know she was sister until later.
Charles sent David as part of study?
Goal:
Observe sibling recognition without disclosed kinship.
David befriended her.
Never recognized.
Grace recognized him from photos but was instructed not to tell.
At eighteen she finally did.
David did not believe.
They fought.
Stopped visits.
Years later records made him realize.
That explained David’s guilt and obsession.
He had known Grace before “discovering” her again.
Their relationship was deeper.
Emma understood why he hid it.
Shame.
Again.
But one thing didn’t fit.
Grace said she first contacted David six years ago.
She had omitted earlier meetings.
Why?
Grace looked ashamed.
“Because I wanted him to think I was stronger than I was.”
Human.
Not conspiracy.
She had loved her brother.
Hated him for not recognizing her.
Then reconciled.
This emotional truth mattered.
Then Emma found David’s final journal line about Grace:
SHE IS NOT ASKING FOR MONEY.
SHE IS ASKING ME TO FIND THE GIRL WE LEFT BEHIND.
What girl?
Claire?
Rose?
No.
Grace said:
“Lila.”
Everyone stared.
Who is Lila?
Another subject?
Grace’s roommate at Vesper.
Younger by four years.
No family.
Code:
CAGE 07.
Emma almost laughed from exhaustion.
But Grace shook her head.
“No.”
“Not another Mercer?”
“No.”
“Then why important?”
“Because Lila disappeared the night I escaped.”
Grace believed Charles’s network took her.
David promised to find.
Never did.
Or died before.
Orpheus had one final unresolved obligation.
Not family blood.
A forgotten victim outside Mercer tree.
May you like
That was the new direction emerging.
But first, the family had to finish Grace.
