Chapter 9 - The ashes of the altar

The harsh, mechanical clatter of automatic weapons loading echoed in the hallway, cutting through the thick smoke pouring from the breached panic room door. Ethan recognized the specific, tactical movements of the men outside. They weren't his loyal private security detail; they were the Vanguard squad, the elite, off-the-books contractors employed directly by the Hale Industries board of directors. The very men his father had used to orchestrate Evelyn’s assassination seven years ago.
They’re not here for me, Ethan realized, the blood running completely cold in his veins. He looked at Evelyn, who was still holding the pistol, her hand shaking as she looked down at Lily. They monitored the security feeds. They know you survived. The board cannot allow the original heir's mother to live. It jeopardizes the entire corporate trust.
Evelyn lowered her weapon, the realization dawning in her mismatched eyes. The vengeance she had planned was suddenly eclipsed by the immediate, overwhelming threat to her daughter. She had walked directly into the lion's den to reclaim her life, only to trap her child in a kill box.
We have to move, Ethan commanded, his voice regaining its lethal, authoritative edge. He raised his assault rifle, stepping into the doorway of the panic room, using his broad-shouldered frame to shield the three women behind him.
A hail of suppressed gunfire erupted from the hallway. Bullets sparked violently against the heavy steel frame of the panic room door, deafening in the confined space. Ethan returned fire, his tactical training taking over, unleashing controlled, precise bursts into the smoke. Two Vanguard contractors dropped, but more were advancing down the corridor.
I only have one magazine left, Ethan shouted over the roar of gunfire, ducking back inside the room as the drywall in the hallway disintegrated under heavy fire. We can't hold this position.
Evelyn looked around the small, sterile room, her mind racing. She shoved her suppressed pistol into Emily’s hands. Emily gasped, the cold metal heavy and terrifying in her grip.
Take the gun, Evelyn ordered, her voice a harsh, commanding rasp. When the shooting starts, you grab Lily and you run for the emergency hatch in the floor. The maintenance tunnels lead out to the cliffs behind the estate. Do not stop running until you reach the main road.
What are you going to do? Emily asked, her watery blue eyes wide with terror, staring at the woman whose face she inadvertently wore.
I’m going to buy you time, Evelyn said, a tragic, profound calm settling over her ruined features.
No, Evelyn! Ethan yelled, realizing her suicidal intent. We fight out together!
Evelyn looked at the extraordinarily handsome man who had ruined her life, and then down at the little girl who was the only beautiful thing to come from it. She knelt quickly, pulling Lily into a desperate, crushing embrace. She kissed the top of the girl's golden pigtails, inhaling the scent of her child one last time.
I love you, my beautiful girl, Evelyn whispered, a single tear cutting a clean path through the soot and scars on her cheek. Remember that your real Mommy fought for you.
Lily sobbed, clinging to the dark tactical jumpsuit. Mommy, don't go!
Evelyn gently pushed the child into Emily’s arms. Protect her, she commanded Emily, her unscarred eye locking onto her replacement with fierce, undeniable authority. You owe me that much.
Before Ethan could stop her, Evelyn grabbed two high-explosive flashbang grenades from the emergency armory rack on the wall. She pulled the pins simultaneously. She didn't look back. She charged blindly out of the panic room, screaming a feral, agonizing roar of absolute rage and vengeance, diving directly into the corridor filled with Vanguard contractors.
The twin detonations were blinding, apocalyptic flashes of white light and concussive force that shook the entire mansion. The hallway erupted into a chorus of agonizing screams and blind, chaotic gunfire.

Go! Ethan roared, grabbing the heavy steel plate of the emergency floor hatch and hauling it open.
Emily didn't hesitate. She clutched Lily tightly to her chest, her pale summer dress stained with soot and terror, and threw herself into the dark, narrow maintenance tunnel below. Ethan followed instantly, pulling the heavy steel plate shut above them just as the gunfire in the hallway reached a deafening crescendo, leaving the first Emily to her violent, fiery redemption in the smoke above.
