Chapter 6 - The severed grid

The sudden plunge into the blood-red glow of the emergency lighting transformed the luxurious nursery into a sinister, claustrophobic trap. The concussive boom still echoed in Ethan’s chest. His military-honed reflexes, buried beneath years of corporate boardrooms and tailored suits, ignited instantly. He grabbed Emily by the arm, pulling her away from the doorway, and scooped Lily up from the plush rug in one fluid motion.

We need to get to the panic room, Ethan commanded, his voice a low, harsh whisper that brokered no argument.

Where is Marcus? Emily asked, her breath coming in rapid, terrified gasps as she clutched the sleeve of his dark sweater. Where is security?

Ethan didn't answer. He drew his suppressed 9mm pistol from his shoulder holster, his piercing blue eyes scanning the dark hallway. If the primary grid was severed with explosive force, it meant the scarred woman wasn't working alone, or she had spent the last several weeks meticulously rigging the estate’s infrastructure. The security team was either neutralized or heavily engaged at the perimeter.

He led them swiftly down the corridor, moving away from the main staircase. The panic room was located in the center of the master suite, concealed behind a massive, custom-built mahogany bookcase. It was a reinforced steel vault, equipped with independent ventilation, a hardened communication line, and an arsenal of weapons.

They reached the master suite without encountering anyone. The silence in the mansion was far more terrifying than the sound of gunfire. Ethan pushed the heavy doors open, sweeping the vast bedroom with the barrel of his pistol. The room was empty. He ushered Emily and Lily toward the bookcase, engaging the hidden biometric scanner hidden behind a decorative sconce.

The heavy steel door hissed, sliding open to reveal the stark, heavily fortified sanctuary.

Get inside, Ethan ordered, gently pushing Emily and the trembling six-year-old through the threshold.

You aren't coming? Emily panicked, grabbing his arm as he remained in the bedroom. You can't leave us in here!

I have to find Marcus and secure the perimeter, Ethan said, his sharp jaw set with lethal determination. If she breached the house, she knows the layout. She will find a way to compromise the ventilation or the secondary power. I cannot let her dictate the battlefield. Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone but me.

Ethan pulled his arm away, the heavy steel door sliding shut with a definitive, metallic clank. He watched the locking bolts engage, sealing the woman he loved and his daughter inside an impenetrable box.

Inside the panic room, the air was cool and smelled of sterile metal. The emergency LED lighting cast a pale, white glow over the small space. Emily sank onto the reinforced steel bench, pulling Lily tightly onto her lap. The little girl buried her face in Emily’s chest, her tiny hands gripping the cashmere fabric of her sweater. Emily stroked her golden hair, trying to calm her own racing heart.

He's going to be okay, Lily-bug, Emily whispered, though she was trying to convince herself as much as the child. Daddy is going to make sure the bad lady goes away.

Lily looked up, her enormous blue eyes shining with unshed tears. She's not a bad lady, Emily, the little girl said softly, her voice echoing in the small steel box. She just wants her face back. And she said she has to take yours to get it.

Emily froze, a cold shiver running down her spine. The psychological conditioning the scarred woman had performed on Lily was horrifyingly deep.

Before Emily could respond, a soft, mechanical click echoed from the back of the panic room.

Emily spun around, her watery blue eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror.

The panic room had a secondary, emergency escape hatch built into the floor, designed to drop down into the subterranean maintenance tunnels in case the main doors were compromised by fire. The heavy steel plate covering the hatch was slowly, silently sliding open from the inside.

The scarred woman hadn't breached the house to hunt them in the hallways. She had used the explosion as a distraction, forcing Ethan to lock his family directly into the very cage she was already hiding beneath.

A figure slowly rose from the dark hole in the floor.

It was the first Emily.

She wore a dark, tactical jumpsuit, her movements stiff and agonizingly slow, a testament to the severe physical trauma she had survived seven years ago. The right side of her face was a horrifying tapestry of jagged, burn-like scars and reconstructed tissue, deeply discolored and unnatural. But the left side of her face—the side untouched by the yacht's propellers—was a perfect, flawless mirror image of the woman sitting on the steel bench.

Hello, imposter, the scarred woman rasped, her voice a damaged, damaged hiss. I believe you are sitting in my chair.
