Chapter 7 - The mirror of sins

The heavy steel walls of the panic room seemed to close in, shrinking the space into a suffocating, claustrophobic coffin. The scarred woman stepped fully out of the emergency hatch, the metal plate sliding shut behind her with a heavy thud. She did not hold a weapon. She didn't need one. The sheer psychological terror of her presence paralyzed Emily completely.
Emily sat frozen on the steel bench, clutching Lily to her chest. Her delicate, angelic face was pale, her watery blue eyes locked onto the nightmare standing mere feet away. The resemblance on the unscarred left side of the woman's face was uncanny, horrifyingly precise. It was like looking into a funhouse mirror that reflected only pain and madness.
Don't touch us, Emily whispered, her voice trembling violently, trying to project a courage she did not feel.
The scarred woman tilted her head, a grotesque, lopsided smile stretching across her ruined features. I have no intention of touching the child. She is the only pure thing he ever created. But you... you are a thief. You stole my name. You stole my face. You stole the life I bled for.
I didn't steal anything from you! Emily cried, her protective instincts flaring as she shielded Lily’s eyes. I didn't even know you existed until today! Ethan told me his first fiancé died!
The scarred woman let out a harsh, rasping laugh that sounded like tearing metal. Ethan told you what you needed to hear. He is a master of creating beautiful, obedient illusions. You think he loved you because of your gentle soul? He loved you because you are a flawless, unblemished replica of what I used to be. You are not a wife, Emily. You are a replacement part. A silicone doll he bought to fill the empty space in his perfect, billionaire portrait.
The words struck Emily with devastating accuracy, piercing the doubts she had suppressed since she first met the extraordinarily handsome, controlling billionaire. The whirlwind romance, his obsession with her appearance, the way he styled her hair exactly like the woman standing before her. She was a ghost story, resurrected for his convenience.
Lily wiggled out of Emily’s grasp, sliding off the steel bench.
Lily, no! Emily gasped, reaching for the child.
But Lily did not run to the corner. The six-year-old girl with golden pigtails walked slowly, deliberately toward the scarred woman. She looked up at the terrifying, ruined face without a single ounce of fear in her enormous blue eyes.
Real Mommy, Lily said softly, reaching out her tiny hand to touch the scarred woman’s dark tactical jumpsuit.
The scarred woman fell to her knees, the harsh, rigid anger melting instantly into profound, shattering maternal grief. She wrapped her arms around the little girl, burying her ruined face in Lily’s golden hair, sobbing with a raw, agonizing desperation. My beautiful girl, she wept, rocking the child back and forth. I missed you so much.
Emily watched the horrific reunion, her mind fracturing. What did you just say? Emily demanded, her voice a hollow, breathless whisper.
The scarred woman looked up, her unscarred eye blazing with a triumphant, venomous fire. You didn't really think her biological mother died of complications during childbirth, did you? Ethan’s family board of directors orchestrated my accident on the yacht because I refused to sign their draconian prenuptial agreement. I was pregnant with his heir. They couldn't allow a strong-willed, unpredictable woman to control the future of the company.
They tried to kill you, Emily realized, the horrifying truth settling over her like a shroud. Ethan’s father ordered the hit.
And Ethan watched me fall, the scarred woman hissed, her voice filled with pure, unadulterated hatred. He didn't push me, but he stood on the deck and watched me bleed into the water, too terrified of his own family to save me. I survived by clinging to a buoy for twelve hours. I had to deliver my own daughter in a filthy underground clinic in Europe, hiding from his assassins. And when she was born, his men found me. They took my baby. They took my face. And they left me to die in a burning warehouse.

The scarred woman stood up, gently pushing Lily behind her. But I didn't die. I spent seven years cutting my way back to this house. And now, the fake mother is going to disappear, and I am going to take my family back.
Before Emily could respond, the heavy steel door of the panic room groaned loudly. The locking bolts shrieked as explosive breaching charges detonated on the outside, blowing the massive steel door violently off its hinges. Smoke and fire poured into the small room as Ethan Hale stepped through the threshold, an assault rifle raised to his shoulder.
