Chapter 8 - The bloodline conspiracy

The explosion deafened the occupants of the panic room, filling the sterile space with acrid, choking white smoke. The heavy steel door crashed against the far wall, vibrating the metal floor beneath their feet. Ethan stepped into the breach, his athletic, broad-shouldered physique cutting a terrifying silhouette against the red emergency lighting. His midnight-navy tuxedo jacket was gone, his white shirt stained with blood and soot. He looked like a god of war, his piercing blue eyes sweeping the room with lethal intent, his assault rifle leveled directly at the scarred woman.

Get away from my daughter, Evelyn, Ethan roared, using the first Emily's true, original name, a name he had buried alongside his conscience seven years ago.

Evelyn did not flinch. She stood her ground, shielding the terrified six-year-old girl with her scarred body. She looked at the barrel of the rifle, her ruined face twisting into a mask of pure, bitter defiance. You couldn't save me on the boat, Ethan. Are you finally going to finish the job your father started? Are you going to shoot the mother of your child in front of her?

Ethan’s finger hovered agonizingly over the trigger. His jaw clenched so tight the muscles threatened to snap. He looked past the monster his family had created, his eyes locking onto Emily, who was huddled on the steel bench, coughing through the smoke.

Emily, get Lily and get behind me, Ethan ordered, his voice trembling with a desperate, frantic urgency.

Emily didn't move. She stared at the extraordinarily handsome man who had built her entire reality on a foundation of blood and lies. Is it true, Ethan? Emily asked, her voice surprisingly steady, cutting through the ringing in his ears. Did your father try to murder her? Did you know she was pregnant when they threw her into the propellers?

Ethan lowered the rifle a fraction of an inch, the undeniable guilt finally cracking his perfect, billionaire armor. I didn't know about the baby, Emily. I swear to God, I didn't know until they brought Lily to me months later and told me she was mine. My father controlled everything. He said Evelyn was a liability. He said she stole from the company and vanished. When I found out the truth, when I realized he ordered the hit... I took the company from him. I destroyed his legacy to protect Lily.

You didn't protect me! Evelyn screamed, taking a furious step toward him. You replaced me! You bought a shiny new toy with the same face to ease your pathetic, cowardly conscience!

Evelyn reached behind her back, pulling a heavy, suppressed 9mm pistol from the holster of her tactical jumpsuit. She did not aim at Ethan. With shocking, agonizing speed, she swung the weapon and aimed it directly at the second Emily's forehead.

Drop the rifle, Ethan, Evelyn commanded, her voice a harsh, ragged rasp. Drop it, or I blow her perfect, unblemished face all over the steel wall.

Ethan froze. The tactical advantage was completely obliterated. He looked at Evelyn, recognizing the manic, broken desperation in her unscarred eye. She had nothing to lose, and she had spent seven years visualizing this exact moment of vengeance.

Don't do this, Evelyn, Ethan pleaded, his voice breaking, abandoning the commanding tone of the CEO for the desperate begging of a broken man. She is innocent. She had nothing to do with what happened to you. Take your revenge on me. I deserve it.

Evelyn laughed, a dry, horrific sound. Killing you is too easy, Ethan. You need to suffer. You need to watch everything you love die, just like I did in the dark water.

She tightened her finger on the trigger.

Suddenly, a tiny figure stepped between the gun and the steel bench.

Lily, wearing her soft cotton pajamas, stood directly in the line of fire. Her enormous blue eyes looked up at the scarred woman, filled with a profound, innocent sadness that no child should ever possess.

Real Mommy, please don't hurt her, Lily whimpered, her tiny hands reaching up to touch the barrel of the suppressed pistol. She reads me stories when I'm sad. She's nice.

Evelyn stared at her daughter. The psychological conditioning she had spent weeks whispering into the child's ear in the dark nursery suddenly fractured against the reality of the child's genuine affection for her replacement. The hand holding the pistol began to tremble violently. The murderous rage warred with the overwhelming, agonizing love of a mother who had been denied her child for six years.

In that microscopic, devastating moment of hesitation, the sounds of heavy, armored boots echoed in the hallway outside the panic room. The corrupt security forces employed by Ethan's corporate board—the men who had originally hunted Evelyn—had finally breached the master suite, and they were not here to take prisoners.
