Chapter 9 - What Claire Was Afraid to Lose
Claire had received roughly $4.2 million from Adrian’s estate.
Not an empire.
Not controlling shares.
Insurance, property and trust distributions.
Most still existed.
If Adrian legally returned, litigation would follow.
Claire might keep some, return some, depending law and fraud knowledge.
But bigger issue was her life.
Eight years of widowhood.
A new home.
Investments.
Identity built around loss.
Adrian’s return would detonate everything.
When he met Claire, he did not apologize.
He asked her for help recovering archived reproductive material.
She refused.
Then he said:
“You’ll understand when child exists.”
Claire realized he had plan.
She tried freeze Vault 17.
Failed.
Months later Rachel’s envelope arrived showing Emma pregnant with Adrian’s child.
Claire thought Adrian had selected Emma as weapon against Ethan and her.
She drove to mansion.
Confrontation escalated.
Emma fell.
Claire picked up red heel.
She raised it.
Would she actually strike?
Ethan entered before answer.
The law would address intent from evidence.
But Claire could not hide behind Adrian.
She chose violence.
Then Ethan found another layer.
His own fertility sample had not simply been discarded.
Aaron Pike said Adrian instructed it be frozen separately.
Why?
Police recovered vial.
Ethan’s specimen remained viable.
No destruction.
Adrian had stolen Ethan’s paternity but preserved possibility.
Was that supposed to make crime better?
No.
But motive mattered.
Adrian apparently expected truth eventually discovered and believed Ethan/Emma could choose another embryo later.
A chilling utilitarian calculation.
Emma said:
“He treated pregnancy like moving pieces on a board.”
Exactly.
Maya asked Rachel where Adrian was.
Rachel had not seen him physically in years.
Only secure video.
She possessed one emergency meeting location:
Cedar Point boathouse.
Police found it empty.
But fresh coffee.
Recent fingerprints.
Adrian’s fingerprints matched old military? He wasn't military. Passport application records.
He had been there within twenty-four hours.
On table:
a sealed envelope for Ethan.
Inside:
I am sorry for what I did to Emma.
I am not sorry for making sure Meridian can be reopened.
Ethan nearly tore letter.
Emma stopped him.
“Read all of it.”
Adrian claimed Richard Vale and three executives used Meridian to acquire patient genetic datasets without proper consent from struggling clinics.
Not human experimentation.
Not secret cloning.
Data exploitation.
Adrian initially participated by approving invoices.
Later realized consent failures.
Ethan’s audit threatened expose.
Adrian intended cooperate.
Then someone threatened Claire.
He fled.
Why not go federal protection?
Adrian claimed he did not trust internal channels after documents vanished.
He made catastrophic choices.
Rachel helped.
Richard helped conceal.
Then final paragraph:
A direct Vale descendant can petition Meridian Trust archive when the current controlling beneficiary dies or when living beneficiary status is contested.
Richard controlled family interest after Adrian’s legal death.
If Adrian revealed alive, Richard’s authority contested.
So why need baby?
He didn’t.
Adrian himself could reopen archive by returning.
Ethan saw contradiction.
“He didn’t need a child.”
Emma looked at him.
“Then why create one?”
That was the real mystery.
