Chapter 11 - Rachel’s Missing Forty-Eight Hours
Rachel disappeared from investigators for forty-eight hours.
Not physically.
Her timeline did.
During week of embryo fertilization, she claimed to be in Portland.
Credit card showed Portland.
Phone showed Portland.
But airline manifest showed Rachel Stone flew Boston under middle name.
She finally admitted.
“I came to stop Adrian.”
She met Aaron outside Hawthorne.
She knew Adrian had discussed heir.
She told Aaron not to touch Emma’s cycle without direct consent.
Aaron said he already had approval.
Rachel asked to see.
The document looked wrong.
She recognized Emma’s signature from public corporate filings?

She suspected forgery.
Why not warn Emma?
Rachel said:
“I was afraid if I contacted her, Adrian would disappear again before I could expose him.”
So she chose investigation over immediate protection.
By time she decided tell Ethan, embryo had been transferred.
Pregnancy established.
She then obtained prenatal test to prove substitution.
Why send to Claire first?
She believed Claire could lure Adrian into open.
Again using people.
Emma’s anger toward Rachel hardened.
“You knew before I knew.”
“Yes.”

“Four months.”
“You watched me plan nursery.”
“I’m sorry.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
“Stop saying sorry like it returns choices.”
Rachel had not forged consent.
Investigators proved that.
But she had discovered fraud early and withheld.

Aaron recalled email wording:
CONSENT VERIFIED — PROCEED V17-A.
Signature block:
A.V.
Adrian Vale.
Cryptographic header was authentic.
Meaning message originated Adrian’s secure account.
Adrian did authorize.
But voice message said stop if Emma said no.
Possibility:
Adrian believed consent genuine because someone sent forged Emma consent to him.
Who sent that?
Digital trail led through Vale family cloud server.
User:
CVALE34.
Claire Vale.
Claire screamed:
“I DID NOT.”
Her account had been accessed at 2:11 a.m.
Device:
mansion foyer iPad.
Whose mansion?
Richard’s Vale estate where Claire temporarily stayed after death? Current living? Need simple: Vale family mansion, not Emma/Ethan mansion.
Security footage from that night existed.
A figure walked into study.
Not Claire.
Richard.
Richard looked stunned.
“I was asleep.”
Could be staff.
Camera angle showed only silhouette.
Height shorter than Richard.
Female.
Rachel?
Rachel was supposedly Portland then but had flight next day.
Eleanor? no.
Family housekeeper:
Nora Blake, 58.
Worked for Vales twenty-seven years.
Nora admitted using iPad that night.
At whose request?
Adrian’s mother.
Helen Vale.
Seventy-one.
Until now barely mentioned because she lived in assisted residence following stroke.

Helen had access to Claire’s passwords because she managed family accounts after Adrian’s death.
Why would mother forge Emma consent?
Police interviewed.
Helen did not deny.
“I wanted my son to come home.”
“How does forcing a pregnancy do that?”
“Adrian said he could not return until he had something Richard could not bury.”
“A child?”

Helen believed biological grandchild would force family trust, death declaration and corporate archive into court.
Public process would expose Adrian alive.
She thought creating heir would compel him to stop hiding.
Did Adrian know she forged Emma consent?
No.
She sent fake consent to Adrian.
Adrian believed Emma had agreed confidentially.
He authorized his sample.
Aaron executed switch.
After transfer, Helen expected Emma eventually informed by Adrian.
He delayed.
Then Rachel discovered.
Then everything collapsed.
Emma stared when told.
An elderly mother desperate to bring son home had commandeered another woman’s pregnancy.
Helen’s motive was emotional.
Action remained monstrous.
But Claire still had one secret.
If she did not forge consent, why did she react to prenatal report as though she already knew baby was Adrian’s?
