Chapter 4 - The Man Who Called Himself Adrian
Melissa never saw his face.
That was her first claim.
A man contacted her through encrypted email.
He knew Adrian’s storage ID.
Vault number.
Original preservation date.
Private phrase Adrian used with clinic.
He claimed he was Adrian Vale.
He said his death had been staged years earlier for his safety.
He wanted confirmation his reproductive sample still existed.
Melissa should have reported message.
Instead she became fascinated.
Then frightened.
The man sent photograph of Adrian taken after supposed death.
Metadata unreliable, but appearance convincing.
He knew details no stranger should know.
Melissa accessed Vault 17.
The specimen existed.
Destruction record had been falsified years earlier.
By whom?
An administrator named Peter Shaw.
Peter was former Hawthorne compliance officer and longtime friend of Richard Vale.
He died three years earlier.
Again dead end.
Then the man instructed Melissa not to destroy anything.
She refused further involvement.
Months later she discovered someone had accessed her credentials during Emma’s fertility cycle.
She suspected her account had been used to override barcode.
She reported internally but resigned when clinic initially treated it as her error.
“Why contact Claire?”
“Because sample belonged to her husband.”
“What did she say?”
Melissa hesitated.
“She already knew someone was contacting clinic.”
Claire had received letters.
Anonymous.
All contained same sentence:
YOU BURIED THE WRONG MAN.
Claire initially believed cruel prank.
Then one letter included photograph taken inside Vale family summer house after Adrian’s death.
A room only he knew well.
She hired private investigator.
The investigator found evidence Adrian might have survived boating incident.
Claire told nobody.
Why?
Because if Adrian lived, eight years of insurance, estate and legal declarations became complicated.
But that alone did not explain violence toward Emma.
Melissa continued.
Two weeks before Emma’s embryo transfer, Claire came to Hawthorne.
She demanded Vault 17 be frozen from all access.
“Did she ask you to switch embryo?”
“No.”
“Did she know Emma was patient?”
“Yes.”
Claire and Emma were not close, but Claire knew Ethan’s fertility treatment through family conversation.
Then Melissa said:
“Claire thought Adrian was targeting Ethan.”
“Why?”
“Because Adrian blamed Ethan for what happened eight years ago.”
Ethan stared.
“I barely knew him.”
“Apparently he knew you.”
Ethan remembered Adrian as Claire’s charming husband who attended three family dinners.
Nothing more.
Then Maya uncovered company history.
Eight years ago, Ethan had been junior executive at Vale Biomedical, company owned by Claire and Adrian’s family.
Two weeks before boating accident, Ethan discovered accounting irregularities in research division.
He reported them.
A federal audit followed.
Adrian was vice president of that division.
The boating accident happened before investigators interviewed him.
After Adrian’s death, case shifted.
No criminal charges against him posthumously.
Company paid civil settlement.
Ethan had never connected accident to audit.
Claire had.
She believed Ethan’s report set everything in motion.
Maybe Adrian did too.
Emma asked:
“Are you saying a man who disappeared eight years ago came back to put his sperm into my embryo because he hates Ethan?”
Melissa shook head.
“I don’t know.”
Then Detective Maya entered with Claire’s private investigator report.
Final page contained a photograph.
Adrian Vale.
Alive.
Taken six months earlier.
