Chapter 13 - Adrian Vale Walked Into the Room
Adrian looked older than photographs.
Gray at temples.
Scar along jaw.
Lean.
But he was unmistakably man from Claire’s wedding.
DNA confirmed identity.
Adrian Vale was alive.
The man buried eight years earlier was Luis Ortega.
Authorities began process to correct identity and investigate how Luis was misidentified.
Adrian admitted participating in concealment.
He admitted allowing wife Claire to believe he died.
He admitted remaining hidden long after immediate threat passed.
He admitted planning creation of biological heir.
But when Maya accused him of knowingly using Emma without consent, Adrian looked shaken.
“Helen sent me consent.”
“Did you speak to Emma?”
“No.”
“Then you knew nothing.”
“I was told confidentiality was Ethan’s condition.”
“By whom?”
“My mother.”
Helen had told him Ethan and Emma agreed only if no direct contact occurred until pregnancy viable, because Ethan feared legal exposure.
Adrian believed because Ethan historically cautious.
Was that credible enough?
Barely.
But Adrian wanted to believe.
He did not verify because verification could produce answer he didn’t want.
Maya placed responsibility plainly:
“You built a plan where everybody talked about Emma except Emma.”
Adrian lowered eyes.
“Yes.”
Why choose Emma’s egg?
Meridian Trust legal standing.
Adrian believed a child biologically his, raised by Ethan, could eventually force independent archive review even if Adrian disappeared again.
Why not return himself?
He feared Richard would destroy archive before court recognized him.
Adrian had evidence Richard had once ordered off-site files shredded when audit began.
Did Richard?
Investigators later found he authorized destruction of duplicate administrative copies, not core Meridian archive. Adrian had interpreted as cover-up.
Some suspicion justified.
Some paranoia grew in hiding.
What was Meridian?
A patient-data acquisition program Vale Biomedical funded through contractors.
Hospitals shared de-identified genetic datasets.
Some consent forms were inadequate.
Some data may have remained re-identifiable.
Adrian approved invoices early.
Then objected after discovering consent problems.
Ethan’s financial audit uncovered payments.
Adrian feared criminal and civil exposure.
Private contractor threatened reputational destruction and possibly violence—evidence of explicit physical threat limited to anonymous messages.
No proof of murder plot.
Yet Adrian fled.
His disappearance created bigger fraud.
Why did he tell Claire “child will finish what I started”?
Because descendant could petition archive through trust if represented independently.
Why “that baby can never be born” from Claire?
Because birth would:
prove Adrian reproductive material used,
trigger trust questions,
risk exposing Adrian alive,
reopen Claire’s estate,
reveal Richard’s role,
and destroy Claire’s constructed life.
Also Claire irrationally believed Adrian was “coming back” through child.
None justified attack.
Then Ethan asked Adrian one question.
“Did you want to replace me?”
Adrian looked confused.
“As father.”
“No.”
“You used my fertility appointment.”
“I wanted you to be father in every way except genetics.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t get to assign me that.”
“No.”
“You stole that choice.”
“Yes.”
Emma entered interview room voluntarily later.
Adrian stood.
She stopped him.
“Sit.”
He did.
She placed hand on belly.
“This baby is mine.”
“Yes.”
“Not your project.”
“Yes.”
“Not your key.”
Adrian looked at floor.
“Yes.”
“And whatever happens after birth, you don’t decide.”
He nodded.
Emma asked:
“Do you understand why Claire wanted to stop her?”
“I understand fear I created.”
“Fear doesn’t move the shoe.”
“No.”
Claire owned that.
Adrian owned his.
Then Maya arrived.
Meridian Trust attorneys had reviewed clause.
Adrian’s child did not need be born to preserve archive.
Court could freeze records immediately based on Adrian’s return and fraud evidence.
Meaning the entire reproductive scheme had been unnecessary.
Emma looked at Adrian.
