Chapter 9 - The Mask Begins to Slip

Panic surged through Claire as she rushed to the iron door, pounding her fists against the cold metal and shouting for help. But the basement was soundproofed, built deep beneath the main foundation of the mansion where no sound could penetrate the upper floors. For two long hours, she remained trapped in the dark, her pristine emerald dress wrinkled and covered in dust as her composure completely disintegrated.

Above, Lily sat in the kitchen, calmly drinking a glass of warm milk while watching the storm rage against the window. The house staff had been dismissed for the evening, leaving the estate entirely empty except for the child and her trapped stepmother. Lily looked at the grandfather clock ticking in the corner, counting down the minutes until her father’s car was scheduled to pull up the driveway.

When Ethan’s car headlights finally swept across the kitchen window, Lily placed her glass in the sink, walked down the basement stairs, and quietly turned the heavy key in the archive lock, stepping back into the shadows just as her father entered the front foyer above. The door swung open, and a disheveled, hysterical Claire burst out, rushing up the stairs to find Ethan standing in the main hall.

Claire pointed a trembling finger down the stairs, screaming that someone had locked her in the basement and that there was an intruder in the house. Ethan looked at his wife's wild eyes, her ruined dress, and her smeared makeup, his expression filled with growing concern—not for her safety, but for her sanity. When he walked down to inspect the archive room, the iron door was wide open, the wall safe was fully closed, and the single piece of paper was nowhere to be found.
