Chapter 15 - The Final Move

The following morning, the sun broke through the clouds, casting a brilliant light over the Vanderbilt estate. Claire returned home at dawn, her face pale and exhausted, but carrying a sense of quiet triumph. Julian had assured her that the final transfer was complete, and by noon, federal investigators would arrive at the mansion with a warrant for Ethan’s arrest.

She walked into the grand foyer, expecting to find the house in quiet disarray. Instead, she was met by four uniformed police officers and two federal agents standing beside Ethan, who stood calmly near the foot of the staircase wearing a dark suit. Beside him stood Lily, holding her father's hand with an angelic, innocent expression.

Claire’s smile faltered as the lead agent stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. He read her rights aloud, citing grand larceny, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to commit attempted murder based on the video evidence and financial logs submitted to the district attorney's office at midnight. Claire backed away, her eyes wild as she looked at Ethan, screaming that Julian had set her up, that she was innocent.

The front doors opened, and two more officers led a handcuffed Julian Vance up the driveway, his polished image entirely shattered as he was forced into the back of a police cruiser. Claire was pushed toward the waiting squad car, her emerald dress catching on the doorframe as she looked back one last time at the porch.

Lily stood beside her father on the high stone steps, watching her stepmother being driven away. As the police cars pulled down the long driveway, Lily reached up with her free hand and slowly opened her mother’s gold locket, looking at the tiny photograph inside. Ethan looked down at his daughter, placing a protective hand on her shoulder, completely unaware that behind the mother's photo lay a second, smaller compartment—one that contained a tiny black key labelled with the logo of a private security vault in London that belonged neither to Ethan nor Catherine.

Lily snapped the locket shut with a subtle click, a faint, secretive smile touching her lips as she looked toward the horizon, ready for whatever game was about to begin next.
