Chapter 7 - A Shadowed Past

As the adults argued in the study behind closed doors, Lily sat on the upper landing of the grand staircase, her legs dangling through the wooden balusters. She held a small antique silver key in her palm—a key she had found tucked inside the lining of her mother's old silk scarf three days before the pool incident.

Her mind traced back to the months leading up to her mother’s death. Everyone believed Catherine Carrington had been a quiet, fragile woman who succumbed to a sudden illness. But Lily remembered the late-night typing, the hushed phone calls conducted in foreign languages, and the way her mother had spent hours teaching her how to memorize complex patterns and numerical sequences under the guise of playing simple childhood memory games.

Downstairs, the library door opened, and Julian stepped out, his expression solemn. He paused at the foot of the stairs, looking up to see Lily watching him. For a fraction of a second, a strange, unreadable expression passed over the lawyer's face—a flicker of recognition that vanished as quickly as it came. He adjusted his tie, offered the little girl a polite nod, and walked out the front entrance into the rainy afternoon.

Lily closed her hand over the small silver key. She recognized the look Julian had given her; it was the exact same expression her mother used to wear whenever someone walked into the room who couldn't be trusted. The lawyer wasn't just managing the family estate; he was actively tracking the same money trail that was encrypted on the microchip in her locket.
