Chapter 2 - The Silent House

The interior of the Carrington estate was suffocatingly quiet, save for the soft tread of Ethan’s boots against the hardwood floor. He carried Lily straight upstairs, wrapping her in a heavy fleece blanket before setting her gently on the edge of her four-poster bed. Outside the doorway, the quiet rustle of silk announced Claire’s arrival, though she kept her distance, her hand resting against her bruised cheek where Ethan’s strike had already begun to swell into a faint crimson mark.
Ethan did not look at his wife as he knelt beside his daughter, his hands trembling as he dried her wet hair with a plush towel. He checked her pulse, listened to her shallow breathing, and waited until her shivering slowed to a gentle tremor. Every line on his face spoke of a guilt so profound it rendered him mute; he had allowed this woman into their lives, believing she would bring warmth back into a house that had been cold since his first wife died.

Claire stood in the shadow of the hallway, her tear-stained eyes reflecting a calculation that went far deeper than mere embarrassment. She had underestimated the child, and more importantly, she had underestimated Ethan’s lingering attachment to the past. The slap had been an insult, a public humiliation on her own terrace, but as she pressed her manicured fingers against her jawline, her expression hardened into something far more dangerous than hurt pride.
When Ethan finally stood up and turned around, his eyes were devoid of the warmth Claire had spent two years cultivating. He walked past her without a single word, his shoulder brushing against hers as he descended the grand staircase to call the family physician. Left alone in the doorway, Claire stepped silently into the bedroom, her eyes fixing directly on the small blanket-wrapped figure sitting on the bed. Lily didn't flinch or look away; she simply stared back, her fingers tightly clutching the gold locket hidden deep within the folds of the fleece.
